SK hynix showcased its leadership in AI memory technology at the CXL DevCon, unveiling a range of CXL products including the CMM-DDR5 and HMSDK, and presenting on the potential of CXL technology for future applications.
- SK hynix is a leading semiconductor company with a strong reputation in the industry.
- The company showcased a range of CXL products at the conference, solidifying its position as a leader in AI memory technology.
- CXL technology has the potential to greatly enhance system bandwidth and processing capacity, making it a crucial technology for the AI era.
SK hynix, a leading semiconductor company, recently took part in the inaugural Compute Express Link Consortium Developers Conference (CXL DevCon) in Santa Clara, California. The conference, organized by the CXL Consortium, brought together over 240 global semiconductor companies to showcase their latest technologies and research findings.
CXL, which stands for Compute Express Link, is a technology that harmonizes the interfaces of various devices within a system, including semiconductor memory, storage, and logic chips. With its ability to enhance system bandwidth and processing capacity, CXL is gaining attention as a Crucial Technology for the AI era, where high performance and capacity are paramount.
Under the theme “Memory, The Power of AI,” SK hynix launched a range of CXL products at the conference, solidifying its position as a leader in AI memory technology. One of the highlights was the CXL Memory Module-Double Data Rate 5 (CMM-DDR5), which demonstrated an impressive increase in system bandwidth by up to 50% and capacity by up to 100% compared to systems equipped with only DDR5 DRAM.
To further enhance system capabilities, SK hynix showcased the Heterogeneous Memory Software Development Kit (HMSDK), a software that supports CMM-DDR5. When integrated into systems with both CMM-DDR5 and standard DRAM modules, HMSDK intelligently allocates data to the appropriate memory device based on frequency of use, resulting in significant performance improvements.
Another notable product on display was Niagara 2.0, a solution that enables multiple CXL memories to be interconnected, allowing CPUs and GPUs to efficiently share their capacity. By eliminating idle memory usage and reducing power consumption, Niagara 2.0 addresses inefficiencies such as redundant data processing, ultimately enhancing overall system performance. These CXL products are expected to find applications in AI and high-performance computing (HPC) systems in the near future.
During the conference, Wonha Choi, a Distinguished Engineer from SK hynix’s Next-Gen Memory & Storage team, delivered a presentation titled “Enabling CXL Memory Module, Exploring Memory Expansion Use Cases & Beyond.” The talk covered various aspects of CXL technology, including its adoption, components, research cases, performance, and potential future applications.
Looking ahead, SK hynix aims to solidify its leadership in AI memory technology by further advancing CXL technology for its expanding product lineup. The company’s participation in CXL DevCon 2024 serves as a testament to its commitment to driving innovation in the semiconductor industry.
