AMD’s Server Market Share Surges to 33%, Achieving Record CPU Dominance Over Intel

AMD’s EPYC server processors are stirring up the tech industry, achieving an impressive all-time high revenue share of 33% at the end of last quarter. This marks a significant milestone for Team Red, as their server market share saw a notable increase of 1.2 points quarter-over-quarter and an impressive 5.2 points year-over-year.

The Epyc server unit share also experienced growth, reaching 23.6% compared to the previous quarter’s 23.1% and a substantial increase from the same quarter the previous year, which stood at 18.1%. These numbers indicate that AMD’s Epyc processors are gaining traction and becoming increasingly popular among server users.

But it’s not just the server market where AMD is making strides. The Ryzen desktop CPUs have also seen healthy gains, with a unit share of 23.9% and a revenue share of 19.2%. The AM4/AM5 processors, in particular, have shown impressive growth, gaining 4.1 and 4.7 point unit share quarter-over-quarter and year-on-year, respectively.

Several factors contributed to these positive numbers, including the release of the Ryzen 8000G (Phoenix) and the increasing popularity of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and the 7600. While the revenue share saw more modest increases, rising by 3.3% and 3.8% quarter-over-quarter and year-on-year, respectively.

However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for AMD in the mobility segment. The unit share dropped slightly to 19.3%, while the revenue share fell by 0.1%. These declines can be attributed to the launch of Intel’s Core Ultra “Meteor Lake” processors, which posed stiff competition in the market. On a positive note, the year-on-year numbers showed growth, with a 3.1 point unit share increase and a 4.0 point revenue share increase.

In the x86 client market, AMD had a strong Q1, gaining 0.4 point unit share and 1.0 revenue share over the previous quarter. The chipmaker’s revenue share also saw a significant growth of 3.8 points year-on-year, while the unit share increased by 3.6 points. At the end of Q1 2024, AMD held an impressive 20.6% CPU unit share and a 16.3% revenue share, up from 17% and 12.5% in Q1 2023.

These numbers clearly demonstrate AMD’s growing dominance in the CPU market, particularly in the server segment where they have achieved record-breaking market share. With their Epyc processors gaining popularity and their Ryzen desktop CPUs showing healthy gains, AMD is positioning itself as a formidable competitor to Intel.
