CES Las Vegas

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger introduces the Lunar Lake chip, boasting advanced AI capabilities and a 3X increase in performance compared to their current Meteor Lake SoC, at the Intel Vision 2024 keynote.

  • Intel's Lunar Lake chip will push the boundaries of on-chip AI capabilities and performance.
  • Lunar Lake is estimated to deliver 3X the AI performance of Intel's current Meteor Lake SoC.
  • Intel's goal to ship 100 million AI PCs by 2025 shows their commitment to enhancing on-chip AI capabilities with each successive generation.

During the recent Intel Vision 2024 keynote, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger launched the Lunar Lake chip, showcasing its advanced AI capabilities. This follows a similar reveal by Michelle Johnston Holthaus, EVP and General Manager of Intel’s Client Computing Group, at CES 2024. However, Gelsinger went beyond a mere photo op and provided valuable insights into the AI performance we can expect from Lunar Lake upon its launch.

According to Gelsinger, Lunar Lake, slated for release later this year, will push the boundaries of on-chip AI capabilities and performance. Speaking at the Intel Vision event, Gelsinger referred to Lunar Lake as the “flagship SoC” for the next generation of AI PCs. Intel claims that Lunar Lake will deliver 3X the AI performance of their current Meteor Lake SoC, an impressive feat considering Meteor Lake is estimated to operate at around 34 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) when considering the NPU, GPU, and CPU combined.

To break it down further, within Meteor Lake, 11 out of the 34 TOPS are solely attributed to the NPU. However, Intel asserts that Lunar Lake’s NPU will reach a substantial 45 TOPS, comparable to the Hailo-10 add-in card and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite processor. When factoring in the integrated graphics and compute cores, Intel claims a combined total of over 100 TOPS. Microsoft’s definition of an ‘AI PC’ sets the bar at 40 TOPS, and Intel’s NPU comfortably meets this criterion.

Intel hints at gaining significant TOPS performance from the NPU, possibly through new technologies or leveraging a more advanced node like Intel 18A. However, Intel did not elaborate on the specific measurement of TOPS performance, whether it be INT8 or INT4.

One thing is evident: Intel is committed to enhancing on-chip AI capabilities in desktop PCs and notebooks with each successive generation. This aligns with their goal to ship 100 million AI PCs by the end of 2025, as they have already shipped 5 million units and plan to sell an additional 40 million by year-end.
