Samsung Electronics America has launched its latest ruggedized tablet, the Galaxy Tab Active5, designed to meet the demands of frontline work. The tablet builds upon the success of its predecessor, the Galaxy Tab Active3, and offers significant improvements in performance, durability, and security. The Galaxy Tab Active5 is targeted towards various industries, including retail, foodservice, manufacturing, transportation, construction, and the public sector.

The Galaxy Tab Active5 caters to the needs of retailers with features such as a high-resolution camera, near-field communication (NFC), and push-to-talk functionality. These capabilities enable efficient barcode scanning, mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) transactions, and in-store communication. The tablet also offers new capabilities for other industries that require a high level of durability.

Brad Haczynski, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobile B2B at Samsung Electronics America, stated that the Galaxy Tab Active5 is the company’s most capable ruggedized tablet yet. It provides frontline workers with a powerful and durable device that can assist them in various tasks, including customer service, merchandise scanning, and inventory management.

One of the key highlights of the Galaxy Tab Active5 is its durability. It can withstand drops of up to 1.5 meters on its own and 1.8 meters in its protective case. The tablet also features Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for enhanced scratch resistance on the display. With an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance and compliance with MIL-STD-810H certification, the device offers protection against altitudes, temperatures, vibration, and humidity. The tablet’s touch screen is designed to be used in wet conditions or with gloves on, and it has been tested for use with sanitizers. Additionally, the tablet comes with an IP68-rated S Pen for note-taking and capturing customer signatures in any weather condition.

Despite its ruggedness, the Galaxy Tab Active5 maintains a slim and lightweight design, making it highly portable for use in various environments. It is 10.1 mm thick and weighs 433 grams.

The Galaxy Tab Active5 is packed with features that enhance productivity for retail associates. It includes a programmable side key that allows instant access to push-to-talk functionality, enabling seamless communication with colleagues across the store. The tablet also offers a louder maximum speaker volume for clear communication in noisy environments.

With its 13-megapixel camera, the Galaxy Tab Active5 can function as an enterprise-grade barcode scanner, capable of capturing entire batches in a single scan via Knox Capture. It also supports NFC payment reader technology and Knox Platform for POS, making it a convenient payment solution for stores and restaurants.

The tablet offers enhanced PC connectivity, allowing quick content sharing, simultaneous displays, and seamless work continuity with a PC through Link to Windows. It can also emulate a desktop interface for tasks that require workers to transition from the field to the office.

To ensure full integration into any workplace, the Galaxy Tab Active5 is compatible with a range of third-party accessories, including docking stations, POGO chargers, keyboards, and field-ready cases.

Connectivity is a key aspect of the Galaxy Tab Active5. It supports 5G and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, enabling collaboration and communication throughout the workplace. Additionally, the tablet offers eSIM support, enabling users to have separate phone numbers for work and personal use. This feature also allows for easy switching between two SIM cards depending on the network environment.

The Galaxy Tab Active5 is designed for all-day power. It supports POGO charging, which simplifies the charging process by enabling multiple devices to be charged at once using POGO docks. The tablet also comes with a replaceable battery and supports fast-charging, minimizing downtime between charges. It can even run without a battery in No Battery Mode, allowing for continuous use in kiosks or vehicles while preserving battery health in hot environments.

The tablet’s 8.0-inch display features Vision Booster technology for enhanced visibility in bright outdoor conditions. The screen is 13% brighter than the previous generation and has a 120 Hz Refresh Rate for smoother viewing of detailed documents.

Technology Explained

IP68: IP68 is an Ingress Protection (IP) rating commonly used to describe the level of protection a device has against the intrusion of solid particles and liquids. It's often associated with smartphones, smartwatches, and other electronic devices, especially those designed to withstand challenging environmental conditions. In the case of IP68: - The "6" in the first digit means the device is completely dust-tight. It's designed to prevent any solid particles, including dust, from entering. - The "8" in the second digit indicates that the device is capable of being immersed in water beyond 1 meter (approximately 3.3 feet) for an extended period of time. The exact depth and duration can vary depending on the manufacturer, but it generally implies a high degree of water resistance or even waterproofing. In simpler terms, an IP68-rated device is highly resistant to dust and can be submerged in water without getting damaged. However, the specific capabilities may still vary among different devices, so it's always a good idea to check the manufacturer's specifications for exact details.

NFC: NFC, or Near Field Communication, is a technology that allows devices to communicate with each other wirelessly when they are in close proximity. This technology has become increasingly popular in the computer industry as it offers a convenient and secure way to transfer data between devices. For example, many modern laptops and smartphones are equipped with NFC, allowing users to simply tap their phone on their laptop to transfer files or make payments. In addition, NFC is also used in contactless payment systems, where users can make purchases by tapping their credit card or smartphone on a payment terminal. This technology has also been integrated into smart home devices, allowing users to control their home appliances with a simple tap. Overall, NFC has revolutionized the way we interact with technology, making tasks such as data transfer and payments faster and more convenient.

Refresh Rate: The technology refresh rate is a measure of how often a computer system is updated with new hardware and software. It is an important factor in the computer industry, as it determines how quickly a system can be upgraded and how well it can handle new applications. The refresh rate is usually measured in years, and it is important for businesses to keep their systems up to date in order to remain competitive. A higher refresh rate means that the system can handle more applications and can be upgraded more quickly. This can be beneficial for businesses that need to keep up with the latest technology trends. Additionally, a higher refresh rate can help reduce the cost of maintaining a system, as newer hardware and software can be more efficient and cost-effective.
