According to a recent report from Jon Peddie Research, the global PC-based graphics processor unit (GPU) market experienced significant growth in Q4’23, with shipments reaching 76.2 million units. Additionally, PC CPU shipments saw an impressive year-over-year increase of 24%, marking the largest growth in over 25 years. Looking ahead, the GPU market is expected to maintain a compound annual growth rate of 3.6% between 2024 and 2026, ultimately reaching an installed base of nearly 5 billion units by the end of the forecast period.
One notable trend highlighted in the report is the projected penetration of discrete GPUs (dGPUs) in PCs, which is expected to reach 30% over the next five years. In terms of market share, AMD experienced a slight decline of -1.4% compared to the previous quarter, while Intel’s market share increased by 2.8%. nVidia, on the other hand, saw a decrease of -1.36%.
In terms of overall unit shipments, the GPU market saw a 5.9% increase from the previous quarter. AMD’s shipments declined by -2.9%, while Intel’s rose by 10.5%. Nvidia experienced a decrease of -1.5%. The report also revealed that the overall attach rate of GPUs in PCs (including integrated and discrete GPUs) for the quarter was 113%, representing a -3.3% decrease from the previous quarter.
Furthermore, desktop graphics add-in boards (AIBs) utilizing discrete GPUs saw a 6.8% increase from the last quarter. The PC CPU market as a whole experienced a 9.0% quarter-to-quarter increase and a significant 24.0% year-over-year increase.
Dr. Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research, noted that the fourth quarter often serves as an indicator for the following year, suggesting that 2024 will be a strong year for the PC market. However, he also cautioned against excessive optimism and enthusiasm surrounding the introduction of AI-capable PCs. While early examples from companies like Adobe, Microsoft, and CAD suppliers show promise, widespread utilization of AI capabilities is not expected until the end of the year at the earliest.
GPUs and CPUs are considered leading indicators of the PC market since they are incorporated into systems during the manufacturing process. However, many semiconductor vendors are guiding down for the next quarter, with an average guidance of -7.1% for Q1’24. Despite this, some organizations interpret the consecutive quarters of growth as a positive sign for a potentially fantastic 2024.
