Hey there, tech enthusiasts! Nick Suttner here, making a switch from my usual Playstation Blog gig to bring you some exciting news as co-founder of Furniture & Mattress studio. Today, I’m thrilled to unveil our debut game, Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure. Now, you might be wondering what on earth “role-puzzling” means. Well, let me break it down for you. We’ve spent the past few years meticulously crafting a world that embodies the essence of a role-playing game, complete with captivating towns, atmospheric wilderness areas, quirky characters, and peculiar monsters lurking in dungeons. But here’s the twist: everything in Arranger is presented through the language of a puzzle game. That’s right, role-puzzling!
Picture a vast and interconnected gameplay grid that serves as the entire game world. As our protagonist Jemma traverses this grid, everything on the same row or column moves alongside her. She can even loop herself or other objects from one edge of the grid to the other. Throughout the 8-10 hour single-player adventure, we constantly introduce new and intriguing twists to these mechanics, ensuring a delightful blend of breezy gameplay and satisfying head-scratchers. And fear not, we’ve got several assist options available if you’re just not feeling up to the challenge.
Now, no RPG would be complete without a compelling story, and Arranger is no exception. We’ve strived to create a fun and lighthearted narrative with some thought-provoking themes and ideas for those willing to dive deeper. At its core, the game is a journey of self-discovery for our protagonist Jemma, an outsider from a small town venturing out into a world divided by an unyielding force called static. Can she shake things up and disrupt the stagnation plaguing this exciting yet fractured world?
Of course, we’ve deviated from some of the traditional RPG tropes. There’s no experience points to accumulate or new powers to unlock for progression. Instead, we provide a constant flow of fresh challenges to test your understanding of the mechanics. And forget about managing an in-game inventory – everything you need to interact with exists right there on the grid alongside Jemma. So, if you encounter a locked door, you’ll have to figure out how to move the key one tile at a time, navigating twisty paths and overcoming unexpected obstacles.
Now, you might find the art style familiar, and there’s a good reason for that. Our game is art directed by none other than David Hellman, the brilliant artist behind the critically acclaimed puzzle-platformer Braid. This marks his return as lead artist, and with the support of an incredibly talented team, he’s striving to create a visually striking and unique experience. David’s background as a comic artist shines through in our cutscenes, where he employs evocative comic-style panels to convey crucial story moments.
Joining forces with my co-founder Nico Recabarren, designer of the beloved Ethereal, and the immensely talented composer Tomás Batista, we’re bringing decades of game-making experience to the table. As a small team, we’re dedicated to crafting something truly special for you.
Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure is set to launch in Summer 2024 on PS5, PC (Steam & Epic), and Nintendo Switch. We couldn’t be more thrilled to finally share this exciting project with you all. Thanks for tuning in!
