Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a 2.5D action-adventure game that follows Sargon, a member of the powerful Immortals, as he uses time powers and acrobatic combat skills to rescue a kidnapped prince and uncover a dark secret in a vast citadel complex inspired by Persian mythology and history.

  • Developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, known for their acclaimed titles like Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends
  • Challenging combat inspired by popular fighting games like Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros
  • Unique time manipulation mechanics that affect every aspect of the game

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, the latest installment in the beloved franchise, has finally arrived on multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, Sony Playstation 4|5, XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, PC (via Epic Games Store & the Ubisoft Store), and Amazon Luna. This action-adventure game takes players on a thrilling journey through Persian mythology and history, immersing them in a 2.5D world as they assume the role of Sargon, the youngest member of the powerful Immortals.

In Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, players will utilize Sargon’s acrobatic combat skills and a range of time powers to navigate the mythical Mount Qaf in search of the kidnapped Prince Ghassan. As Sargon delves deeper into the mountain, he uncovers a dark secret at the heart of its time curse. Drawing inspiration from Metroidvanias, the game offers a vast citadel complex and various biomes to explore, including forests, caves, and snowy peaks.

Developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, the studio behind acclaimed titles like Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown builds upon the responsive platforming action that the Rayman games are known for. With a focus on quick reflexes and precise movements, players can expect a challenging experience that rewards skill and precision. The game aims to deliver a performance of at least 60 frames per second across all platforms, ensuring smooth gameplay.

Combat takes center stage in Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, drawing inspiration from popular fighting games like Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros. The controls are intuitive and streamlined, allowing players to execute impressive sword combos with a single button press. By incorporating juggling, dashing, and Sargon’s bow and arrow, players can stun enemies and unleash devastating finishers. Observing enemy movements is crucial, as a yellow flare indicates an incoming strike that can be parried and countered for massive damage.

Producer Abdelhak Elguess emphasizes the game’s unique approach to time, stating, “Prince of Persia has always been about time, and what we wanted to do differently from other Prince of Persia games is to have time affect every element, every aspect of the game.” Sargon’s time powers allow him to create a “shadow” of himself frozen in time, enabling him to instantly switch places. He can manipulate time to perform double-jumps, pull himself to distant points, and dash through the air. Switching between realities reveals hidden platforms and objects, while time-warping puzzles require the coordination of multiple recordings to progress.

While the ability to rewind time is absent, Elguess explains that this design choice maintains player interactivity and control. Instead, the shadow ability allows players to “rewind” to a predetermined spot without interrupting the action. This decision ensures a seamless and engaging gameplay experience.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown also takes a fresh approach to its Persian setting, incorporating elements of Persian history, mythology, anime, and superheroes. The game showcases larger-than-life Immortals battling colossal monsters with awe-inspiring techniques. The Simurgh, a bird-like deity, is a important presence throughout Mount Qaf, with its wings visible in the skyline and its claws reaching into the darkest depths. Historical figures like Xerxes and Darius are referenced in the story, and ancient Persian art and statuary adorn the environments. The game’s ambient music, composed by Samar “Mentrix” Rad, heavily incorporates traditional Persian instruments and musical styles.

Producer Abdelhak Elguess expresses the team’s desire to celebrate Persia and delve into its mythology. He states, “From the beginning, we wanted Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown to really celebrate Persia. It’s very, very different from the Arabic world. And we wanted to go farther into the past, before the Islamic period, because we think mythology is universal.” The team’s extensive research into Persian mythology uncovered fascinating creatures and stories that they eagerly incorporated into the game.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is now available on various platforms, providing players with a captivating adventure that combines thrilling combat, intricate time manipulation, and a rich Persian setting. Whether you’re playing on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, PC, or Amazon Luna, this game promises an immersive experience that will keep you hooked from start to finish.
