Phison Electronics introduces new range of UFS controllers, including the cost-effective PS8327, to meet the growing demand for high-speed and low-power mobile storage, with plans for future releases targeting different smartphone markets.
- Cost-effective UFS 2.2 controller PS8327 offers high performance-to-cost ratio
- Phison's extensive experience in UFS research and development ensures robust error correction capabilities
- New lineup of UFS controllers caters to all categories of smartphones, from entry-level to flagship
Phison Electronics, a important player in the NAND storage solutions market, has launched its latest range of UFS (Universal Flash Storage) controllers. These controllers, namely PS8325, PS8327, PS8329, and PS8361, cater to entry-level, middle, premium, and flagship smartphones, delivering optimal performance and enhancing user experiences.
As smartphone devices demand higher performance, many entry-level 5G models have transitioned from eMMC to UFS 2.2 storage. Even flagship 4G phones are adopting the UFS 2.2 specification. Compared to eMMC’s half-duplex mode, UFS 2.2’s full-duplex mode significantly boosts read speeds by three times. This enables smartphones to handle data-intensive tasks such as high-resolution recording and video playback while consuming lower power, thus improving battery life.
In response to the evolving storage requirements of smartphones, Phison has introduced the cost-effective UFS 2.2 controller PS8327. This controller offers an unprecedented performance-to-cost ratio, meeting the growing demand for high-speed mobile storage. Despite its small size achieved through a 22 nm process, the PS8327 can achieve speeds of up to 1000 MB/s with NAND Flash capacities as low as 64 GB. Phison’s comprehensive suite of UFS storage solutions ensures cost-effectiveness, high performance, and low power consumption for mobile devices.
Furthermore, the PS8327 boasts Phison’s in-house sixth-generation LDPC ECC engine, providing robust error correction capabilities. It supports existing NAND Flash requirements from various manufacturers and is expected to support next-generation NAND product specifications.
K.S. Pua, CEO of Phison, emphasized the company’s decade-long expertise in UFS research and development. Pua stated that the PS8327 is a culmination of Phison’s extensive experience and has received significant industry recognition. The controller has been quickly adopted by important NAND manufacturers and is expected to make mobile devices equipped with Phison’s PS8327 highly competitive in the market.
In addition to the PS8327, Phison has introduced four UFS controllers this year: PS8325, PS8327, PS8329, and PS8361. This new lineup significantly enhances the competitiveness of Phison’s existing UFS product line. From entry-level to flagship smartphones, each category now has an optimal UFS storage solution to meet consumer needs.
The UFS 3.1 PS8325 targets high-end smartphones, featuring TSMC’s 12 nm process and a dual-channel design. It supports the latest 1 TB NAND from various manufacturers, providing a total capacity of 1 TB. With Phison’s self-developed 4 KB LDPC error correction engine, the PS8325 offers advanced ECC capabilities, enhancing stability and lifespan of smartphone storage. The controller has already secured design wins from leading international smartphone manufacturers and is set to begin mass production in Q1 of this year.
The UFS 3.1 PS8329 focuses on the mid-range smartphone market. Utilizing a 22 nm process, it is the smallest UFS 3.1 controller available and can achieve read and write speeds exceeding 2000 MB/s through a single-channel configuration. The 4K LDPC ECC error correction engine ensures outstanding compatibility and performance with next-generation NAND Flash. Sampling of the PS8329 is planned for June this year.
Finally, the UFS 4.0 PS8361 targets the highest specifications in the flagship smartphone market. It features TSMC’s 12 nm process and a 4-channel design, delivering read and write speeds exceeding 4000 MB/s, twice the performance of UFS 3.1. This high-speed data transfer capability enables quick app launches, multitasking, and reduces wait times for loading applications, providing users with a seamless experience. The improved power efficiency of the PS8361 effectively extends the battery life of mobile devices. NAND manufacturers have already designated the PS8361 for use, and shipping is expected to commence in the second half of this year.
