New CAMM2 Memory Module Standard Released by JEDEC in Breakthrough Development

JEDEC has released the JESD318 CAMM2 standard, which sets out the electrical and mechanical requirements for DDR5 and LPDDR5/5X CAMM2s, with varying pinouts and mounting procedures to accommodate different motherboard designs, and supports stackable configurations for increased memory capacity, demonstrating the association's commitment to innovation and future scalability in the microelectronics industry.

In a significant move for the microelectronics industry, JEDEC Solid State Technology Association has announced the release of JESD318: Compression Attached Memory Module (CAMM2) Common Standard. This standard sets out the electrical and mechanical requirements for both Double Data Rate, Synchronous DRAM Compression-Attached Memory Modules (DDR5 SDRAM CAMM2s) and Low Power Double Data Rate, Synchronous DRAM Compression-Attached Memory Modules (LPDDR5/5X SDRAM CAMM2s) in a single, comprehensive document. The standard is now available for download from the JEDEC website.

DDR5 and LPDDR5/5X CAMM2s serve different purposes in the market. DDR5 CAMM2s are designed for performance notebooks and mainstream desktops, while LPDDR5/5X CAMM2s target a wider range of notebooks and specific segments of the server market. Although JESD318 CAMM2 establishes a common connector design for both DDR5 and LPDDR5/X, it is important to note that the pinouts differ between the two. By intentionally varying the mounting procedures, DDR5 and LPDDR5/X CAMM2s prevent modules from being mounted where they shouldn’t be, accommodating different motherboard designs.

As previously announced earlier this year, JESD318 CAMM2 supports stackable CAMM2s, including dual-channel (DC) and single-channel (SC) configurations. By splitting the dual-channel CAMM2 connector into two single-channel CAMM2 connectors, each half can support a different level of CAMM2. The first half enables one DDR5 memory channel at a height of 2.85 mm, while the second half supports another DDR5 memory channel at a height of 7.5 mm. Alternatively, the entire CAMM2 connector can be used with a dual-channel CAMM2. This scalability from single-channel and dual-channel setups to potential multi-channel configurations promises a significant increase in memory capacity.

Mian Quddus, Chairman of JEDEC’s Board of Directors, expressed the association’s commitment to serving the industry with innovative standards through the development of JEDEC CAMM2. He emphasized the versatility of CAMM2 across various use cases and its design with future scalability in mind. Tom Schnell, Chairman of JEDEC’s CAMM Task Group, added that JEDEC CAMM2 is poised to support and drive next-generation products, offering designers a wide range of modularity options.
