Intel is part of the E4S Alliance, providing hardware, software, security, AI, and communication technology solutions to modernize the energy grid and enable better integration of renewable energy sources.
- The E4S solution digitalizes the next generation of substations using secure, modular, silicon-enhanced technology.
- The solution enhances grid flexibility and enables better accommodation of renewable energy sources.
- The E4S solution reduces capital and operating costs while ensuring safety and reliability.
Intel has announced its involvement in the Edge for Smart Secondary Substations (E4S) Alliance’s solution to modernize the energy grid. The E4S solution aims to transform the existing closed-hardware architecture of the energy grid into an open, flexible, software-defined system. This technology is crucial for maximizing the potential of renewable energy resources.
With over 17 million secondary substations in Europe alone, the E4S solution digitalizes the next generation of these substations using secure, modular, silicon-enhanced technology. Intel’s role in the E4S Alliance involves providing hardware, software, security, AI, and communication technology solutions.
The transition to renewable and clean energy sources is essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the intermittent nature of renewable energy poses challenges for grid integration. The E4S power technology at the substation level enhances grid flexibility and enables better accommodation of renewable energy sources when available. Implementing the solution at a single substation can have a significant impact on reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Intel is committed to achieving 100% renewable electricity in its own operations by 2030 and is supporting its value chain’s transition to renewable electricity.
The E4S secondary substation solution utilizes Intel Core processors and incorporates AI, IoT capabilities, and networking technology. It empowers energy providers to adapt to changing demands, determine the optimal energy source, and support renewable and intermittent clean energy sources at the grid’s edge. The solution also enhances the resilience of the energy grid, allowing utilities to access different energy sources and integrate them into the grid during natural disasters or emergencies.
By virtualizing the software platform, the E4S solution enables advanced management in operations, remote support capabilities, real-time data analytics, and higher levels of cybersecurity. It reduces capital and operating costs while ensuring safety and reliability. A similar technology called vPAC is being deployed for primary substations in the United States.
The E4S solution is currently undergoing field trials until 2024, with the goal of global adoption. The E4S Alliance consists of various industry leaders collaborating to achieve these milestones.
