Intel APO: The AMD Smartshift Equivalent for P and E Cores Launched

Intel has recently launched its new scheduling optimization technology called APO (Application Optimization) for its 14th Gen processors. While Intel has not provided much documentation on this technology, it claims that it can boost gaming performance in supported titles. Currently, only two games, Metro Exodus and Rainbow Six Siege, support APO.

Despite the limited number of supported titles, users have reported significant performance gains of over 30% in some cases. But how does APO achieve this? ElchapuzasInformatico, a trusted source in the tech community, explains that Intel APO is a form of Dynamic Tuning Technology (DTT). DTT controls the allocation of CPU resources to different processes running in a given environment. This technology has been supported across various hardware for some time now, with AMD’s Smartshift and nVidia’s Dynamic Boost algorithms being good examples.

DTT optimizes gaming performance by shifting power between the CPU, GPU, and GPU memory based on workload needs. It doesn’t change the overall power envelope but modulates its distribution between the CPU and GPU. Unlike Turbo Boost, Dynamic Tuning doesn’t increase voltage or boost the GPU/CPU to a higher limit. Instead, it focuses on tackling power-related bottlenecks and boosting the processor for longer durations.

APO specifically works between the Performance “P” and Efficiency “E” cores. It shifts power between these two core clusters, often increasing boost clocks on the P cores while doing the opposite for their E counterparts. This aligns with what GamersNexus had previously observed.

Interestingly, Intel has been using DTT on its mobile processors to regulate power sharing between the CPU and iGPU. With Ice Lake, Intel has also optimized idle power consumption by predicting user activity and disengaging boost ahead of schedule.

While APO’s current support is limited to just two games, the technology shows promise for enhancing gaming performance on Intel’s 14th Gen processors. As more games are expected to adopt APO in the future, users can look forward to further improvements in their gaming experience.
