In the world of processors, the battle between AMD and Intel has been ongoing for years. Both companies constantly strive to outdo each other with their latest products. And in the latest showdown, AMD’s Ryzen 7 7840U has emerged as the clear winner, outperforming Intel’s Core Ultra 7 155H in a majority of Linux tasks.
Phoronix, a trusted source for benchmarking and testing hardware, conducted extensive tests comparing the two processors across various Linux workloads. The results were definitive – the AMD Phoenix chip not only outperformed its Meteor Lake rival but also consumed less power.
When it comes to content creation tasks like rendering, the Ryzen 7 7840U maintained a significant lead over the Core Ultra 7 155H. In Linux-based rendering benchmarks such as LuxCoreRender and Intel’s Embree path tracer, the Ryzen chip showcased a lead of 20-40% and 23-25%, respectively. What’s more impressive is that it achieved these results while drawing less power than its Intel counterpart.
Blender, one of the most popular rendering tools, also favored the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U. In the Barbershop scene, the Ryzen chip was a staggering 35% faster than the Core Ultra 7 155H. Again, power consumption remained similar between the two chips, but the Intel processor suffered from worse peaks.
Video encoding tasks followed a similar pattern, with the Ryzen 7 7840U consistently outperforming the Core Ultra 7 155H. In Kvazaar 2.2, the Phoenix chip was 30% faster, encoding the output file nearly 5 seconds quicker. The gap widened even further in SVT-AV1 1.8 and uvg266, where the Ryzen chip finished the workload 8 seconds and 4 seconds faster, respectively.
While the Core Ultra 7 155H managed to secure a win in 4K x265 (HEVC) encoding, it was short-lived as the Ryzen 7 7840U quickly regained its lead in 1080p encoding.
Moving on to audio encoding tasks, the Ryzen 7 7840U continued its domination. It held marginal leads over the Core Ultra 155H in FLAC and LAME encoding, compensating for any nominal performance deficit with its lower power consumption.
In the field of machine learning and AI, the Ryzen 7 7840U showcased its expertise once again. In PyTorch and TensorFlow, the AMD chip outperformed the Intel processor by a significant margin. With smaller and larger batch sizes, the Ryzen chip was twice as fast in PyTorch and had a 52% advantage in TensorFlow. It also maintained a lower power draw compared to the Intel chip.
However, there were a few areas where the Core Ultra 7 155H managed to outshine the Ryzen 7 7840U. In PyBench and PHPBench, the Intel processor secured victories, leading the AMD chip by 7% and 17%, respectively.
Overall, AMD’s Ryzen 7 7840U emerged as the clear winner in this showdown, winning 80% or 295 out of 370 benchmarks. The Core Ultra 7 155H, on the other hand, only managed to secure 75 wins, resulting in a winning rate of just 20%. When all tests were combined, the Ryzen chip held a commanding 28% lead over its Intel counterpart.
These results highlight AMD’s commitment to delivering powerful and efficient processors that can compete with Intel’s products. With its Ryzen lineup, AMD continues to push boundaries and provide consumers with high-performance options for their computing needs.
