Rapidus Corporation, a important player in the realm of advanced logic semiconductors, has announced a strategic partnership with Tenstorrent Inc., a computing company specializing in AI-focused computers. This collaboration aims to jointly develop semiconductor intellectual property (IP) for AI edge devices, leveraging the power of 2 nm logic semiconductors.
Tenstorrent, known for its AI processors and servers, also possesses the world’s most high-performing RISC-V CPU IP, which it licenses to customers worldwide. By teaming up with Rapidus, Tenstorrent aims to expedite the development of state-of-the-art devices that cater to the ever-evolving demands of our digital society. Atsuyoshi Koike, President and CEO of Rapidus Inc., expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “I am very pleased to be working with Tenstorrent. Rapidus has already begun construction on the Innovative Integration for Manufacturing (IIM) facility in Chitose City, Hokkaido, which will be Japan’s first production site for logic semiconductors at the 2-nanometer scale and beyond. Additionally, Rapidus has been sending researchers to the Albany Nanotech Complex in New York, USA—a globally semiconductor research center—to collaborate with IBM on developing technologies for the production of 2 nm logic semiconductors. The company also plans to acquire EUV lithography technology, a crucial component for manufacturing advanced semiconductors, from imec. With these advancements, Rapidus aims to commence pilot production at IIM-1 in April 2025, followed by mass production in 2027.
Rapidus is dedicated to bolstering Japan’s industrial expertise by establishing a LSI Foundry. This will be achieved through collaborative efforts with domestic and international materials and equipment industries, as well as partnerships with industry giants like IBM and imec. The company also aims to actively foster collaboration in the realm of intellectual property (IP).
