In Q3 2023, AMD’s data center revenue remained steady at $1.6 billion, the same as the previous year. While Intel’s Data Center revenue experienced a 10% decline YoY, dropping from $4.3 billion in 2022 to $3.8 billion this year, their operating income saw a significant increase of 151%. This might seem impressive at first glance, but it is somewhat misleading. In Q3 2022, Intel’s data center income was at -3% or -$0.1 billion, whereas this year it reached +2% or $0.1 billion. Although Intel managed to bring their operating income into positive territory, it pales in comparison to AMD’s remarkable achievement.

AMD’s operating margins did take a hit, decreasing by 12% from 31% in 2022 to 19% this year. However, their operating income of $306 million is a clear indication of their success in the data center segment. This impressive figure is three times higher than what Intel achieved in the same period.

On the other hand, Intel’s success lies primarily in the client (PC) market. In Q3 2023, they generated a substantial $7.9 billion in revenue, similar to the previous year. Furthermore, their operating income experienced a notable increase of 26%, rising from $1.4 billion in Q2 2022 to $2.1 billion this year.

AMD’s client revenue also saw a significant boost, with a 42% YoY increase from $1 billion to $1.5 billion. However, their operating margins remained slim at just 10% last quarter. Despite this, their operating income of $140 million marks a considerable improvement from the previous year’s -$26 million. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that Intel’s client revenue for Q3 2023 is a staggering 15 times higher than AMD’s.

These latest financial results highlight the fierce competition between AMD and Intel in both the data center and client markets. While Intel continues to dominate the client market, AMD’s success in the data center segment cannot be ignored.
