During the highly anticipated launch weekend of Payday 3, the game saw an impressive peak of concurrent players (CCU) across all platforms, reaching a staggering 218,250. Additionally, the game attracted a peak of 1,347,510 unique players (DAU), showcasing its popularity among gamers. Starbreeze Nebula, the platform hosting Payday 3, currently boasts an impressive user base of 3,794,172 registered users.

However, despite the initial excitement and overwhelming response from players, Payday 3’s matchmaking infrastructure encountered unforeseen challenges that hindered its performance. The matchmaking software faced an unexpected error that rendered it incapable of handling the massive influx of players. This issue created an unrecoverable situation for Starbreeze’s third-party matchmaking partner.

To address these problems, a new version of the matchmaking server software was gradually rolled out across all regions, resulting in improved performance. Unfortunately, a software update implemented by the partner on late Sunday reintroduced instability to the matchmaking infrastructure. The partner is actively working to rectify these issues and stabilize Payday 3’s online systems.

It is worth noting that the problem at hand did not surface during Technical Betas or Early Access due to the specific circumstances of rapid user influx and load-balancing. In light of these challenges, Starbreeze is currently exploring all available options, both short- and long-term. In the short term, their primary focus is ensuring a smooth and enjoyable player experience. Looking ahead, they are evaluating the possibility of partnering with a new matchmaking service provider and reducing Payday 3’s reliance on online services.

Tobias Sjögren, CEO of Starbreeze Entertainment, expressed his disappointment in the issues faced by the player base during the game’s launch weekend. However, he remains confident in the core product and the overall quality of Payday 3. Sjögren acknowledged that rebuilding community trust will require dedicated and consistent efforts, but he reassured players that the team is committed to addressing these challenges head-on.

To keep players informed, Starbreeze will provide continuous updates on the current server status through their social channels. This transparent approach aims to keep the community engaged and informed about the progress being made to resolve the matchmaking issues.

While Payday 3’s launch weekend may have been marred by technical difficulties, it is evident that the game has a strong foundation and a dedicated team behind it. With ongoing improvements and a focus on player satisfaction, Starbreeze aims to regain the trust of their community and deliver an exceptional gaming experience.

Technology Explained

CCU: In gaming, "CCU" stands for "Concurrent Users" or "Concurrent Players." It refers to the number of players or users who are actively engaged in playing a particular online game or using an online service at the same time. CCU is often used as a metric to measure the popularity and server load of an online game or platform, as it provides insights into how many people are simultaneously interacting with the game or service. Game developers and operators monitor CCU to ensure that their servers can handle the player load and provide a smooth gaming experience.

DAU: "Dau" refers to "Daily Active Users." It's a metric used to measure the number of unique users or players who engage with a game or online service on a daily basis. Tracking DAU is valuable for game developers and operators because it helps them assess the daily engagement and retention of players, which is crucial for the success and longevity of a game or online platform. By analyzing DAU data, developers can make informed decisions about game updates, content releases, and user acquisition strategies to keep players engaged and interested.
