SK hynix Inc. announced today that SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won recently paid a visit to the construction site of the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster in Wonsam-myeon, Yongin city, Gyeonggi Province. The purpose of Chairman Chey’s visit was to assess the progress of the construction and provide encouragement to the employees, as the preparations for the Yongin Cluster have been gaining momentum since June.
During his visit, Chairman Chey expressed his belief that the Yongin Cluster is the most meticulously planned and strategically prepared project in SK hynix’s history. He emphasized the need for utmost efforts to ensure the success of the cluster. Efficiency was identified as a top priority, with Chairman Chey stating that the project requires more challenges than the company has faced before. He stressed the importance of proactive planning and adaptation to maintain a competitive edge in the future.
Chairman Chey also highlighted SK Group’s commitment to climate and environment, referencing the company’s RE100 declaration. He emphasized the rising importance of green energy and warned that failure to respond to this change could jeopardize sales. Therefore, he urged the Yongin Cluster to become a “climate positive production base” that not only manufactures high-performance semiconductors but also provides future energy solutions. He called for the cluster to serve as a platform for innovation and co-prosperity, offering infrastructure for materials, components, equipment companies, and high-caliber talents to foster innovation.
In an effort to support research and development within the cluster, SK hynix is collaborating with the government on a joint project to build a “mini fab.” This research and test facility, based on 300mm wafers, will enable the rapid application of technologies and products developed by materials, components, and equipment companies to the mass-production process.
Chairman Chey also emphasized the importance of creating job opportunities that appeal to the next generation. He expressed his hope that the Yongin semiconductor project would be an exciting challenge for all involved, as they work towards designing a new future.
Chairman Chey concluded his visit by expressing his wishes for the success of the Yongin semiconductor project, which he believes will be a testament to the spirit of innovation and overcoming challenges. Alongside Chairman Chey, executives from SK Group affiliates, including SK hynix Vice Chairman Park Jung-ho, CEO Kwak Noh-jung, SK ecoplant CEO Park Kyung-il, and Kim Seong-goo, the head of Yongin General Industrial Complex Inc., a special purpose company created for the semiconductor cluster, also attended the site visit.
Once the site preparation is complete, SK hynix plans to commence construction of its first fab in March 2025, with an expected completion date of May 2027.
