September 6, 2023 by our News Team

SAPPHIRE Technology and Thinlabs have partnered to introduce the Thinlabs PoE NUC, a powerful, fanless, and energy-efficient computing solution that utilizes 802.3bt PoE++ technology to provide both data and power over a single Ethernet cable, allowing up to four HD displays to be powered with a single unit.

  • Eliminates the need for electrical outlets and simplifies power backups
  • Significant energy savings compared to a standard desktop PC setup
  • Fanless design offers enhanced reliability, extended Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), reduced cleaning requirements, and the ability to operate effectively in dusty environments without cooling system failures

Sapphire Technology and Thinlabs have joined forces to introduce an innovative computing solution called the Thinlabs PoE NUC. This unique solution utilizes 802.3bt PoE++ technology, allowing up to four Thinlabs HD displays to be powered over a single Ethernet cable. The motherboard at the core of the Thinlabs PoE NUC is developed by SAPPHIRE and features the AMD Ryzen Embedded V2000 series processor, offering versatility, low power consumption, and high performance.

One of the key advantages of Power-over-Ethernet technology is its ability to eliminate the need for electrical outlets and simplify power backups. With the Thinlabs NUC solution, a single Ethernet cable can provide both data and power to the entire system, reducing installation costs and cable clutter. This technology also enables easier management of backup power, making it ideal for scenarios where multiple computer systems connected to a common switch require emergency battery power.

The Thinlabs PoE NUC boasts several notable features, including a powerful AMD Ryzen V2000 processor with up to 16 threads, a fanless design for extended lifespan and noiseless operation, fast and easy deployment with only a single Ethernet cable, remarkable power efficiency for substantial energy savings at scale, support for up to four monitors, compact size and VESA mounting compatibility, upgradable RAM and SSD, and easy management with Thinlabs Device Manager Enterprise software.

In terms of power consumption, the Thinlabs NUC with four connected monitors consumes under 80 W of power, resulting in significant energy savings compared to a standard desktop PC setup. Deploying 1000 units of the Thinlabs NUC for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week could lead to annual power consumption savings of nearly 250 MWh. Additionally, the reduced heat output from these computers translates to lower cooling demands and further energy savings in air conditioning.

The fanless design of the Thinlabs NUC offers advantages such as enhanced reliability, extended Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), reduced cleaning requirements, and the ability to operate effectively in dusty environments without cooling system failures.

The Thinlabs NUC is suitable for various industries, including kiosks, education, digital signage, healthcare, security, and manufacturing. Its versatility, extensive connectivity options, and user-replaceable RAM and storage make it a capable machine that can effectively replace larger PCs across different tasks.

Technology Explained

MTBF: MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is a measure of reliability used in the computer industry to determine the average time a system or component can be expected to operate without failure. It is a measure of the average time a system or component can be expected to operate without failure. MTBF is used to determine the expected lifetime of a system or component, and is used to compare the reliability of different systems or components. It is also used to determine the expected maintenance intervals for a system or component, and to determine the expected cost of ownership for a system or component. MTBF is an important metric for the computer industry, as it helps to ensure that systems and components are reliable and cost-effective.

SSD: A Solid State Drive (SSD) is a modern data storage device that employs flash memory technology to store data electronically. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in significantly faster read and write speeds. This leads to quicker boot times, faster application loading, and smoother overall system performance. SSDs are known for their durability, shock resistance, and energy efficiency, making them ideal for laptops, ultrabooks, and other portable devices. They come in various form factors, including 2.5-inch, M.2, and PCIe cards, and are favored for their reliability, quiet operation, and reduced heat generation
