MSI is releasing the Z790 MAX series of motherboards designed for Intel's 14th Gen Core processors, with prices up to 16.7% higher than their predecessors, but offering improved cooling, power delivery, I/O, and compatibility with modern network standards.

  • Option to save money by opting for older hardware
  • Wi-Fi 7 support

MSI is set to release a new line of motherboards, the Z790 MAX series, specifically designed for Intel’s upcoming 14th Gen Core processors. These motherboards come with a higher price tag compared to their predecessors, but MSI believes that the improvements in cooling, power delivery, I/O, and compatibility with modern network standards justify the increase.

The decision to raise prices becomes apparent when comparing the MAX series to the previous non-MAX models. Many were expecting MSI to introduce Z890 motherboards, but due to changes in Intel’s plans and the cancellation of Meteor Lake-S, this launch has been delayed. Instead, the Z790 MAX motherboards offer a minor upgrade over the existing Z790 models, which still use the LGA-1700 socket.

The pricing for the Z790 MAX series is as follows:

– MEG Z790 GODLIKE MAX: $1299 (+8.3%)

– MEG Z790 ACE MAX: $699 (+14.7%)

– MPG Z790 CARBON MAX: $499 (+4.1%)

– MPG Z790 EDGE TI MAX: $399 (+5.2%)

– MAG Z790 Tomahawk MAX: $329 (+13.8%)

– Pro Z79-A MAX: $279 (+16.7%)

On average, these boards are expected to cost approximately 10.5% more than their non-MAX counterparts. It’s important to note that the Z790 MAX series will be the last wave of LGA-1700 motherboards from MSI, as the company plans to transition to the LGA1851 socket for Arrow Lake-S CPUs next year. This may make it challenging for customers to accept the higher launch prices, especially considering the alternative AMD AM5 platform, which will receive support for at least the next two years.

The flagship Z790 GODLIKE MAX motherboards will be priced at a staggering $1,299, while the ACE MAX models will cost $699, representing a 14.7% increase over the original ACE models’ launch price.

These motherboards are expected to be released later this month, coinciding with Intel’s unveiling of the 14th Gen Core series, known as Raptor Lake Refresh. It’s worth noting that existing 600 and 700 series boards will remain compatible with the new CPU series, giving potential buyers the option to save money by opting for older hardware unless they specifically require features like Wi-Fi 7 support.
