LG Display has announced the mass production of a 17-inch Foldable OLED panel for laptops, featuring a Tandem OLED structure for extended lifespan, minimized creasing, QHD+ resolution, and high-sensitivity touchscreen solutions for an immersive experience.

  • Tandem OLED structure significantly increases the panel's lifespan, making it ideal for IT devices
  • Minimizes creasing in the folding area of the screen
  • QHD+ resolution (2560 x 1920) on its large screen, delivering high-definition content with an infinite contrast ratio

LG Display, a global leader in display technologies, has announced its plans to begin mass production of a 17-inch Foldable OLED panel for Laptops. This move represents the company’s dedication to expanding its OLED business for IT devices. What sets LG Display’s 17-inch Foldable OLED panel apart is its Tandem OLED structure, which was previously used in automotive displays. This structure significantly increases the panel’s lifespan, making it ideal for IT devices that are used for extended periods.

The Tandem OLED technology, introduced by LG Display in 2019, incorporates an additional organic emitting layer, resulting in brighter screens and improved energy distribution across OLED components. This not only enhances stability but also extends the lifespan of the panel. Such longevity is particularly well-suited for IT devices like laptops, monitors, and Tablets.

One of the standout features of LG Display’s 17-inch Foldable OLED panel is its ability to minimize creasing in the folding area of the screen. Unlike conventional foldable panels, this specialized material ensures a seamless display and crystal-clear picture quality. Moreover, the panel adopts an ‘in-folding’ design, allowing it to fold inwards effortlessly. With a reduced curvature of 3R (radius of curvature 3 mm), the screen achieves a slim and seamless design when folded in half.

The 17-inch Foldable OLED panel boasts QHD+ resolution (2560 x 1920) on its large screen, delivering high-definition content with an infinite contrast ratio unique to OLED technology. When fully unfolded, it functions as a 17-inch portable monitor or tablet with a 4:3 ratio, providing an immersive experience. By adjusting the angle, it transforms into a 12.3-inch laptop with a 3:2 ratio, offering versatility to cater to individual needs.

LG Display has also incorporated high-sensitivity touchscreen solutions into the panel, allowing users to interact with it using either a pen or their fingers. The touch sensor embedded within the panel enhances touch performance, providing a tactile experience similar to writing with a pen.

This latest development solidifies LG Display’s position as a technology leader in the OLED business for the IT industry. The company previously achieved a significant milestone with the mass production of OLEDs for 13.3-inch Foldable laptops in 2020, and it continues to expand its OLED lineup to include 17-inch Foldable laptops this year.

An official from LG Display expressed their commitment to maintaining their competitiveness in the OLED business for the IT industry. They emphasized their focus on differentiated technologies like Tandem OLED and unique folding structures, which will enable them to meet the evolving needs of customers and secure more orders in the future.

Technology Explained

OLED: Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology is a cutting-edge display technology that has revolutionized the computer industry by producing superior image quality and superior energy efficiency. OLED technology works by using organic compounds to create an efficient and flexible light source. This type of technology has enabled thinner and lighter designs as well as improved color range and resolution. OLED technology is currently used in laptop displays and is increasingly used in televisions and mobile devices. Its benefits, such as relatively low power consumption and extraordinary brightness, give a more vivid and more powerful image even in dim areas. OLED technology has also improved computer performance, as its power efficiency passes on to other computer components and leads to extended battery life. OLED technology also features shorter response time and full color reproducibility, making it ideal for fast-paced action games.
