AMD has released a special driver, version 23.20.11.01, for the upcoming game Lies of P. This highly anticipated soulslike video game is designed to take advantage of AMD technologies such as FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 (FSR2) and Combined Adaptive Compute Ambient Occlusion (CACAO). While AMD hasn’t provided specific details about the enhancements this driver offers compared to the main branch, there have been no reported issues with the official 23.9.1 driver when used with this game.

The Lies of P developers recommend AMD users to download this driver, although there haven’t been any major issues reported with the existing 23.9.1 driver. It’s worth noting that this driver, although passing WHQL tests, is not considered WHQL certified as it is not from the main branch. It seems that AMD missed the deadline to release this driver alongside its RX 7800/7700 XT update, which also introduced HYPR-RX support.

Officially, this driver provides support exclusively for RDNA discrete GPUs and a selection of undisclosed integrated graphics solutions. However, there is no indication of support for Polaris or Vega discrete GPUs with this specific driver. It’s important to clarify that this limited support shouldn’t be interpreted as AMD dropping support for these architectures from their primary drivers.

If you’re interested in downloading the driver, you can find it at this link.

Technology Explained

CACAO: Combined Adaptive Compute Ambient Occlusion (CACAO), is a rendering technique that simulates how ambient light interacts with objects in a 3D scene, creating soft shadows and improving the perception of depth. CACAO, being adaptive, adjusts its level of detail dynamically based on the complexity of the scene. It uses the compute capabilities of AMD GPUs to calculate ambient occlusion more efficiently, resulting in better performance and visual fidelity.

FSR: AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a type of rendering technique that looks to boost framerates in games and enable quality high-resolution gaming. It is an software upscaling technology, designed to improve the performance of games without loss of image quality and graphical detail. It works by rendering frames at a lower resolution and then using an open-source spatial upscaling algorithm to make the game look as though it's running at a higher resolution13. It is different from Nvidia's DLSS, which uses machine learning and temporal upscaling to achieve similar results. FSR is part of AMD's FidelityFX image toolkit and does not require specific training or special-purpose logic within the GPU. AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) scales across a broad spectrum of new and older products, including integrated graphics, and is optimized for AMD RDNA and AMD RDNA 2 architecture-based Radeon RX 6000 and RX 5000 Series graphics cards. FSR is also supported on select NVIDIA graphics cards.

RDNA: RDNA (Radeon DNA) is a graphics architecture developed by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) for its Radeon series of graphics cards. It's designed to deliver improved performance, power efficiency, and advanced features for gaming and graphics-intensive applications. RDNA introduces a new compute unit design that enhances the efficiency of processing tasks, resulting in better performance per watt compared to its predecessor, GCN (Graphics Core Next). RDNA also introduces hardware-based ray tracing capabilities, allowing for more realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections in supported games. With its scalable design, RDNA architecture addresses the demands of modern gaming while aiming to provide a more immersive and visually impressive experience.
