AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D Debuts in Collaboration with ASUS ROG Scar 17
ASUS has recently launched its first Ryzen X3D laptop, the ASUS ROG Scar 17, and reviews for this highly anticipated device are now available. The highlight of this laptop is the inclusion of a 3D V-Cache CPU, although it should be noted that the decision to use the powerful 16-core variant has resulted in a higher price point, limiting access to this technology.
The AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX is a 16-core Zen4 CPU with 128MB of 3D V-Cache. With a turbo boost clock speed of up to 5.4 GHz, this CPU operates within a thermal design power (TDP) range of 55 to 75W. The cache is located on top of one of the chiplets, similar to the configuration found in the Ryzen 7000X3D series, where one chiplet utilizes the 96MB cache while the other retains the default 32MB.
To optimize performance, AMD has introduced a special PPM Provision Driver and 3D V-Cache Performance Optimizer software that works in conjunction with Windows Game Mode to determine which tasks should utilize the 3D V-Cache chiplet. However, it’s important to note that not all games can take advantage of the 3D V-Cache, resulting in no improvement in frame rates for those titles.
One interesting aspect to consider is the unique chiplet configuration with the 3D V-Cache layer, which prevents the application of liquid metal. Unlike the desktop “Raphael” X3D series, laptop processors from the Dragon Range series do not have integrated heat spreaders. This has raised concerns among reviewers regarding cooling and fan noise, especially since the original non-X3D Scar 17 laptop uses liquid metal.
Moving on to the reviews, there are only a limited number available as AMD and ASUS chose to provide the laptop for review to a select group of testers. The consensus among these reviewers is that the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is the top CPU for gaming at a 1080p resolution. However, performance drops are observed at QHD resolution (the configuration used by the ROG Scar 17 laptop) and there is no improvement at 4K, which is expected for Laptops with less powerful GPUs.
Unfortunately, none of the reviewers were able to provide a final price for the Scar 17 laptop, which somewhat diminishes the value of the reviews. However, it is anticipated that the laptop will cost around $3000-3500 USD, making it a high-end option rather than an affordable gaming laptop. It is hoped that AMD will release an 8-core X3D SKU with more budget-friendly graphics in the future.
In conclusion, the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D in collaboration with ASUS ROG Scar 17 offers impressive gaming performance with its 3D V-Cache CPU. However, the high price and limitations in certain resolutions may make it less accessible to a wider audience.
