Samsung Electronics has announced a new collaboration with AMD to advance 5G virtualized RAN (vRAN) for network transformation. This partnership aims to enhance the vRAN and Open RAN ecosystems, providing operators with increased flexibility and optimized performance in building and modernizing mobile networks. The two companies have conducted multiple rounds of tests at Samsung’s lab, focusing on high-capacity and telco-grade performance using FDD bands and TDD Massive MIMO wide-bands, while also reducing power consumption.

Samsung utilized its versatile vRAN software integrated with the new AMD EPYC 8004 processors, which are specifically designed for telco and intelligent edge applications. Through technical verification, the EPYC 8004 processors combined with Samsung’s vRAN solutions demonstrated optimized cell capacity per server and high power efficiency.

Henrik Jansson, Vice President and Head of SI Business Group, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering network flexibility and high performance for service providers through this collaboration. He stated, “Samsung has been at the forefront of unleashing the full potential of 5G vRAN technology to meet rising demands, and we look forward to collaborating with industry leaders like AMD to provide operators the capabilities to transform their networks.”
