  • Tri-band technology of the RT6600ax works in conjunction with Smart Connect to optimize device distribution

Synology Inc. has recently launched the RT6600ax, a high-speed and security-focused Router designed to provide fast and secure connectivity for households and offices. This router is supported by the new Synology Router System (SRM) 1.3, which is equipped to address the challenges of modern network environments.

The RT6600ax is Synology’s first Wi-Fi 6-certified router, delivering more reliable Wi-Fi through improved data encoding, beamforming, scheduling, and signal isolation. It also features a 2.5GbE port that can be configured for WAN or LAN deployment, allowing users to leverage Multi-Gig internet connections or high-performance devices such as a NAS. The router is powered by a quad-core 1.8 GHz processor, ensuring fast connection speeds and smooth operations even with multiple devices connected.

The tri-band technology of the RT6600ax works in conjunction with Smart Connect to optimize device distribution, eliminating data transmission bottlenecks. Additionally, compatibility with the newly licensed 5.9 GHz spectrum unlocks non-DFS channels at 80 and 160 MHz, providing a combined 6.6 Gbps of wireless throughput, higher concurrent connections, and faster VPN server performance.

The RT6600ax is powered by SRM 1.3, Synology’s intuitive operating system for routers. This latest version offers improvements and added functionality that expand network management capabilities, meeting the demands for better security and flexibility in today’s network environments. Users have the option to create up to five separate networks, each with up to three Wi-Fi SSIDs, making it easy to strengthen security in multi-purpose network environments. One-way firewall rules can be configured independently for each network, limiting connectivity to and from less secure devices such as IoT equipment. The router also supports the 802.1q standard for easy integration into existing networks in router, AP, and mesh configurations.

SRM 1.3 also brings a host of applications for web filtering, traffic control, and remote access to the new generation of Synology routers. The Safe Access feature allows per-user profiles to be configured to limit time spent online or block browsing based on set conditions. Parental control features include limiting internet usage time, filtering out categories of websites or specific domains, and restricting inappropriate search results. Security is enhanced through network-wide threat blocking and support for Google Safe Browsing.

The Traffic Control feature allows users to distribute available bandwidth among connected devices, prioritizing a single client or application when specific needs arise. Real-time and historical data support granular auditing, with traffic reports generated automatically or on-demand.

For remote workers and hybrid teams, SRM offers a suite of remote connectivity tools through the VPN Plus feature. This includes Web VPN for accessing intranet-only websites directly from a browser, SSL VPN for establishing high-performance connections with a dedicated client, Site-to-Site VPN for bridging multiple locations, and Remote Desktop for remote operation of devices compatible with the RDP/VNC standard.

To enhance the network management experience on the go, Synology has overhauled the companion mobile app, DS router. The 2.0 version of the app brings functionalities that were previously exclusive to SRM, allowing users to create new wireless networks, configure web filtering and parental control, set traffic control schemes, and more.

The RT6600ax is currently available for purchase in the United States, with SRM 1.3 exclusively available on RT6600ax units. Availability of SRM 1.3 will be extended to other Synology routers, including MR2200ac and RT2600ac, later this year.

Technology Explained

NAS: Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a specialized storage device or server that provides centralized data storage and access over a network, usually using Ethernet connections. NAS systems are designed to offer a convenient and efficient way to store and share files among multiple users or devices within a home or office environment. Unlike traditional storage solutions, NAS devices operate independently and have their own operating systems and management interfaces. They are characterized by easy setup and configuration, making them accessible even to users with limited technical expertise. NAS devices can offer various features, including data redundancy through RAID configurations, remote access over the internet, automatic backup, media streaming, and even application hosting in some advanced models. As a versatile and user-friendly storage solution, NAS has become a popular choice for both personal and small business use.
