Synology Enhances Data Protection and System Management Capabilities with DSM 7.1

Synology, a leading provider of data management solutions, has recently announced the general availability of DiskStation Manager (DSM) 7.1. This new release brings significant feature expansions that aim to solve IT challenges and provide even more data protection and system management capabilities.

One of the key improvements in DSM 7.1 is the enhancement of storage management. The introduction of file aggregation portals allows administrators to link multiple Synology systems using SMB DFS capability. This eliminates the need for end-users to remember separate addresses, providing a more convenient file access experience.

The user interface introduced in DSM 7.0 has also been further optimized in DSM 7.1. Background tasks have been consolidated into an administrator-friendly overview, providing greater transparency into system activities across different user accounts. For Synology High Availability clusters, users can now view and manage drives on both systems from a single instance of Storage Manager, making maintenance and management easier.

In terms of performance, DSM has long supported flash caching to boost random I/O performance cost-effectively. With DSM 7.1, SSD caching has been further improved to speed up multiple storage volumes simultaneously, providing even better performance.

DSM 7.1 also introduces complete, bare-metal level backups of the entire system. Powered by Synology Active Backup for Business, this feature allows for quick recovery in the event of a total site failure. It also enables the deployment of identically configured systems, making system restoration quick and convenient.

In addition to DSM 7.1, Synology is launching several major enhancements to applications and services. These include bandwidth control, expanded monitoring and reporting capabilities, and support for DSM backups in Active Backup for Business; centralized login activity and Hyper Backup task status monitoring in Active Insight; C2 server-side snapshots in Synology C2 Hybrid Share; support for read-only domain controllers in Directory Server; expanded indexing capabilities and improved monitoring/auditing capabilities in Synology Drive; virtual DSM support and improved management options in MailPlus; and storage I/O performance improvements and QoS capabilities in Virtual Machine Manager.

DSM 7.1 is now available and is being deployed to Synology systems. With its enhanced data protection and system management capabilities, it is set to provide businesses with a more efficient and secure data management solution.

Technology Explained

SSD: A Solid State Drive (SSD) is a modern data storage device that employs flash memory technology to store data electronically. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in significantly faster read and write speeds. This leads to quicker boot times, faster application loading, and smoother overall system performance. SSDs are known for their durability, shock resistance, and energy efficiency, making them ideal for laptops, ultrabooks, and other portable devices. They come in various form factors, including 2.5-inch, M.2, and PCIe cards, and are favored for their reliability, quiet operation, and reduced heat generation
