AMD is reportedly gearing up to launch its next-generation socket, SP7, alongside its upcoming Venice data-center CPUs. The Venice processors, featuring Zen 6 , CPU cores, are expected to be compatible with the new SP7 socket.

In the coming months, we can anticipate more details about other products like Intel Xeon Falcon Shore, nVidia Blackwell, and AMD EPYC Venice. These codenames represent the potential lineup for the 2025 data-center series, which will include various combinations of CPUs, GPUs, and XPUs.

According to a recent roadmap shared by YuuKi, AMD has plans to introduce a fresh series of Instinct MI400 products. This series will consist of C, A, and X variants, in addition to the new EPYC Venice processor series. Interestingly, if the roadmap is accurate, it suggests that the Venice processors will require a new socket called SP7.

Furthermore, it seems that the Venice series will support 12-channel and 16-channel DDR5 memory configurations, an upgrade from the current series which supports up to 12 channels. There are rumors circulating that the Zen6-based Venice product family might become the first AMD architecture to surpass the 384-core count on a single package. However, it’s important to note that this rumor has not been officially confirmed.

The AMD Venice series is expected to follow the EPYC Turin series, which features the Zen 5 , architecture and is reportedly compatible with the SP5 and SP6 sockets used by EPYC Genoa and Bergamo processors. Unlike the disclosed plans for Zen4 and Zen5, AMD has not yet provided specific details about the Zen 6 , EPYC series, apart from confirming its existence on the leaked roadmap.

The introduction of a new socket suggests that the Zen 6 , architecture will likely have a different packaging to potentially accommodate more chiplets. This strategic move could be in response to Intel’s increasing CPU sizes in the data-center market. Advanced packaging techniques are expected to play a significant role in future CPU architectures as companies explore stacking compute chiplets to enhance performance and efficiency.

It’s worth noting that the AMD EPYC Venice CPUs are not expected to be available before 2025. Prior to the Venice series, AMD is set to launch its EPYC 8004 Siena architecture, which focuses on telecommunication systems and edge servers. These series will utilize a smaller SP6 socket with reduced memory support of up to 8 channels.
