Google is cracking down on fake reviews on its popular mapping platform, Google Maps, using the power of artificial intelligence (AI). The tech giant has confirmed that it is employing AI to identify and remove reviews that are deemed to be false or have been used to artificially boost a business’s rating.

In 2024 alone, a staggering 188 million fake reviews were wiped off the face of Google Maps, with the majority being detected by the company’s internal AI tools. While reviews on Google Maps can provide valuable insights into a business’s reputation, there are groups out there who are determined to manipulate the system, both by posting fake five-star reviews and by launching campaigns to bring down a business’s rating.

Thanks to the use of AI tools, Google has been able to level the playing field by removing nearly 188 million fake reviews from Google Maps. This ensures a fairer system for all businesses on the platform. But how does the AI actually do it?

The system analyzes various aspects of the reviews to identify any that are false or exhibit patterns associated with deceptive behavior. Google goes even further, stating that through the use of AI, it has been able to block almost 240 million reviews, of which 188 million were found to be fake. Additionally, over 10,000 profiles on Google Maps, primarily used to promote fake accounts and misleading reviews, have been removed.

To further enhance transparency, when fake reviews are removed from a business’s Google Maps page, users will now see an alert message informing them that content and ratings have been removed due to being deemed false. Currently, these alerts are only visible in the United States, United Kingdom, and Italy, but Google plans to roll them out globally.

This move by Google is a significant step in combating the growing issue of fake reviews, which can greatly impact a business’s reputation and success. By leveraging the power of AI, Google is working towards creating a more trustworthy and reliable platform for users and businesses alike.

So, the next time you’re checking out reviews on Google Maps, rest assured that the AI is hard at work, weeding out the fakes and ensuring that you get the most accurate and helpful information possible.
