Mountaintop says goodbye to their beloved game Spectre, as they announce its shutdown due to financial struggles and the challenges of the gaming industry.
- Overwhelming support and enthusiasm from fans
- Transparent communication about the game's financial struggles
- Collaboration with industry heroes and dedication to creating a unique gaming experience
A Heartfelt Goodbye from Mountaintop
Hey there, Spectre fans! It’s been a whirlwind two weeks since we dropped Spectre Divide Season 1: Flashpoint, and we can’t thank you enough for the overwhelming support and enthusiasm you’ve shown. However, we’ve got some tough news to share, and we want to be transparent about where things stand.
The Reality Check
Despite our initial excitement—over 400,000 players diving into the game and a peak of around 10,000 concurrent players across all platforms—we’ve hit a wall. As the weeks rolled by, we noticed that the active player count wasn’t enough to keep the lights on at Mountaintop. We stretched our funding as far as it could go, but sadly, we’ve run out of resources to keep Spectre alive.
So, here’s the deal: we’ll be shutting down operations at the end of this week. We expect to take Spectre offline within the next 30 days, but we’ll also be disabling new purchases and issuing refunds for any transactions made since the launch of Season 1. We’ll keep you in the loop with more details soon.
The Search for Solutions
We explored every possible avenue to keep the game afloat—looking for publishers, extra investments, or even potential acquisitions—but, unfortunately, nothing panned out. The gaming industry is facing some significant challenges right now, and it’s a tough pill for us to swallow.
This isn’t just a game to us; it’s a passion project. We built Spectre with love and dedication, and we’re incredibly proud of what we created alongside you, our community.
Reflecting on the Journey
From the very beginning, our indie team—made up of talented folks from all over the globe—set out to craft something special in a crowded genre. We aimed to deliver an innovative experience that would bring friends together for unforgettable moments. We shook up the traditional format, introduced a fresh art style, and collaborated with some of our heroes in the industry.
Sure, we knew the odds were stacked against us, but that’s part of what made this journey so exhilarating. We were all in, ready to take the risks and embrace the challenges.
Learning and Growing
When we launched in September, we faced some hurdles right out of the gate. However, our team rallied together, taking your feedback to heart and making significant improvements across the board, including bringing the game to consoles. Even though it ultimately wasn’t enough to secure financial success, we fought hard and went down swinging.
Game development is a rollercoaster ride filled with unexpected twists and turns. The landscape has shifted dramatically since we first embarked on this journey in 2020. While we may have missed the mark this time, we wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.
Thank You for the Memories
So, what’s next? That’s a question we’re all grappling with. But one thing is certain: we’re going to miss you all dearly. Thank you for being a part of the Spectre community and for all the support over the years. We’ve cherished every moment spent together.
And a special shoutout to our amazing investors—without your belief in us, none of this would have been possible.
That’s all from us for now. We hope to see you out there, wherever the gaming journey takes us next.
With gratitude,
Nate & the Mountaintop Team
