A financial app called SpyLend, masquerading as a legitimate app on the Google Play Store, was found to be stealing sensitive information and extorting victims for money, highlighting the need for caution when downloading apps and reading reviews.

  • Generally considered a safe platform for downloading apps on Android devices
  • App was removed from the Play Store
  • Important to stay vigilant when downloading apps

Google Play Store is generally considered a safe platform for downloading apps on Android devices. However, every now and then, malware manages to slip through the platform’s defenses and ends up being distributed to unsuspecting users. A recent case of this was discovered, targeting users in India, but potentially affecting a long list of devices. The app in question, called SpyLend, was masquerading as a financial application on the Google Play Store.

But here’s the catch: once installed on users’ devices, SpyLend would steal sensitive information and potentially use it against the victims. The app focused on stealing contacts, messages, images, and other content from victims’ devices. Then, the attackers would extort the victims for large sums of money. If the victims refused to pay, the stolen data would be used to send spam messages or share private images on the internet.

These types of apps often lure users in with promises of easy and quick loans, but behind the scenes, they employ aggressive techniques to push users towards making payments—often with high interest rates—resulting in victims paying more than they initially anticipated.

According to researchers from CYFIRMA, a cybersecurity company, the app was available on the Google Play Store for several months and managed to accumulate a total of 100,000 downloads. However, the malicious activities of the app were designed to only work in specific locations, such as India, likely to avoid detection by security systems. Although the app has been removed from the Play Store, it may still be present on the devices of users who downloaded it or even installed in the background, silently collecting sensitive data.

Reviews of the app also revealed the scheme, with users reporting exorbitant payments and extortion techniques. Victims even received manipulated images of themselves superimposed onto explicit images. If the payments were not made, these images would then be sent to all of the victims’ contacts.

Furthermore, the app had the ability to gather contacts, messages, and other personal information stored on devices. All of this data was sent to the attackers’ controlled systems, which they would then use against the victims.

It’s important to stay vigilant when downloading apps, even from trusted sources like the Google Play Store. Always read reviews and be cautious of apps that promise quick loans or ask for excessive permissions. If you suspect an app may be malicious, it’s best to uninstall it immediately and run a security scan on your device.
