Smartkem and AUO: A Game-Changer for Displays

In an exciting development for the tech world, Smartkem is teaming up with AUO, Taiwan’s largest display manufacturer, to create something truly : the world’s first advanced rollable, transparent microLED display. This partnership is set to leverage Smartkem’s innovative organic thin-film transistors, or OTFTs, which could redefine how we think about displays.

Ian Jenks, Smartkem’s Chairman and CEO, is optimistic about this collaboration. He believes that joining forces with a leader like AUO positions Smartkem at the forefront of the microLED display commercialization. “Our unique transistor technology is expected to enable display manufacturers to efficiently produce microLED displays, making mass production commercially viable,” Jenks explained. Imagine going from today’s jaw-dropping microLED TVs, which can cost upwards of $100,000, to something that’s actually affordable for the average consumer. Sounds too good to be true? Well, Smartkem is betting on it.

Revolutionizing Display Technology

What sets Smartkem apart from the competition? It’s all about their low-temperature processing. Unlike traditional methods that require high heat and complex mass transfer techniques, Smartkem’s transistors can be applied directly on top of microLEDs. This means they can sidestep the cumbersome laser welding processes that have become the norm. Instead, they’re able to use low-cost, flexible plastic substrates rather than glass. This not only cuts costs but also opens up new possibilities for design and functionality.

Dr. Wei-Lung Liau, AUO’s Chief Technology Officer, highlighted the significance of this partnership. He noted that AUO has spent years developing microLED technology and is excited to work with Smartkem to push the boundaries even further. “With proprietary materials from Smartkem and the OTFT production process from ITRI, we are collaboratively developing the world’s first rollable MicroLED display for potential commercialization with cost advantage,” Liau stated. This could usher in a new era of displays that are not just functional but also aesthetically flexible.

What This Means for the Future

Leading display analyst Ross Young, who heads Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), also sees the potential in this project. He remarked, “If successful, this will demonstrate the cost effectiveness of Smartkem’s technology in the most demanding of MicroLED applications, and could generate substantial market interest.” It’s a bold claim, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s these two powerhouses.
