For the second consecutive year, Aveiro City has been chosen as the venue for the national communities of technological creativity, gathering in the welcoming space of the University of Aveiro. The Free Software Festival is an event that celebrates and promotes open-source software, providing a platform for sharing and reflection on the latest technologies and citizen participation. It aims to showcase the Free Software communities, their purpose, creations, and their commitment to transforming the world through technological freedom and contribution to society.
Taking place on October 11th and 12th, 2024, at the University of Aveiro’s Department of Electronics, Telecommunications, and Informatics, this event offers various initiatives. These include a debate with members of the Portuguese Parliament on Digital Sovereignty and the role of Free Software in public services. The discussion will highlight how Free Software ensures transparency and democratic responsibility, serving as a crucial element of digital sovereignty.
Additionally, the event will feature the presentation of the Portuguese translation of the book “Ada & Zangemann,” an introduction to the power of Free Software creativity aimed at a young audience. Other activities include a demonstration by Till Kamppeter, the world’s leading expert on printing in Linux systems, showcasing the user-friendly printing systems in Linux and beyond.
Drupal DevDays PT, the content management platform, will gather its esteemed developers to discuss the latest advancements and developments. Ubucon Portugal, the most widely used Linux distribution, will offer workshops on creating interactive applications and games. Wikimedia PT, the world’s most popular online library, will continue its mission of empowering citizens in knowledge dissemination and the use of Wikipedia’s content management tools.
Flutter Portugal, a rapid application development platform created by Google, will also conduct beginner-friendly workshops open to all. Lastly, the Inércia event will bring together technological and artistic creativity, showcasing a fantastic display of sound, light, color, code, electronics, and computers.
