Radeon RX 7800 and 7700, the latest products from AMD, were initially planned to feature the new 12VHWPR connector. However, AMD decided to drop the new connector from its design after considering the comfort and confidence of the gaming community. Scott Herkleman, the Senior Vice President and General Manager of AMD’s Graphics Business Unit, revealed in an interview with Club386 that the company would reconsider using the 12VHWPR connector in the future if the feedback was positive.

Herkelman also addressed the challenges faced by some companies with the new connector, emphasizing the importance of taking responsibility and resolving any issues that affect users. He cited AMD’s response to the vapor chamber problem on its Radeon RX 7900 series as an example of how the company owns up to and addresses problems.

The absence of the 12VHPWR connector on any Radeon graphics card has raised questions among enthusiasts. Herkleman clarified that while the new power cable was not initially planned for the 7900 and 7600 series, it was intended for the 7800 and 7700 series. However, AMD made a deliberate decision to remove it. He emphasized that blaming end users for issues is not the right approach and that companies should take responsibility, just as AMD did with the vapor chamber problem.

The 12VHPWR connector has been updated with a safety feature that prevents the card from receiving excessive power if the connector is not properly plugged in. This update aims to address reports of melting connectors, although some companies still face challenges, particularly those using angled adapters.

While the power issue is not completely resolved, AMD remains committed to ensuring that it is working correctly for end users before incorporating it into future product planning. The company finds it strange that anyone would attribute such issues to end users and emphasizes the need for confidence and reliability in their products.
