AMD Embraces Ryzen AI Branding for Laptop CPUs, Eliminating U, H, or HS Segmentation

AMD is making a significant change to its laptop CPUs by embracing the Ryzen AI branding and eliminating the U, H, and HS segmentation. This move aims to simplify the naming and categorization of their mobile SKUs, ranging from 15W to 45W.

According to a report from Weibo, Lenovo’s China manager, AMD will no longer differentiate between the different power levels and will instead use the same name for the 15W, 35W, and 45W variants. This means that the U, H, and HS branding will be abandoned, except for the HX designation, which will be used for higher-end models such as Strix Point and potentially Strix Halo.

The decision to eliminate the U and H series segments is a departure from the long-standing tradition in the industry. Previously, U-series chips had a TDP (Thermal Design Power) of 15-28W, while H series chips ran at 45W and above. The HS products were cTDP variants of H with a 35W TDP. On the other hand, the HX parts were desktop chips repurposed for mobile use with a TDP of 55-75W.

AMD’s Zen 4 mobile family includes the Phoenix lineup, which consists of Ryzen 7040 processors with TDPs of 28W and 35-54W, and the Dragon Range lineup with Ryzen 7045 processors featuring a TDP of 55-74W. Additionally, there are older Zen 3/Zen 2 rebrands. Another Zen 4 lineup called Hawk Point includes the Ryzen 8040 processor with similar base specifications and TDP segments as Phoenix.

With the new Ryzen AI branding, it may become challenging for users to determine the performance level of different Laptops without checking their TDP and specifications. The HX naming will now be limited to the Strix Point/Strix Halo SKUs with a TDP of 35W-45W, which adds another layer of confusion.

While this change aims to simplify the operation and testing processes for AMD, it may require users to pay closer attention when choosing a laptop based on performance requirements. The Ryzen AI branding will undoubtedly create a learning curve for consumers who were accustomed to the previous U, H, and HS segmentation.
