Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (Toshiba) has made significant strides in the world of hard disk drives (HDDs) by achieving storage capacities of over 30 TB. This achievement is the result of their successful implementation of two next-generation recording technologies: Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) and Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (MAMR). With these breakthroughs, Toshiba is paving the way for the development of commercial products based on these recording formats.
HAMR, one of the two technologies driving the future of high-capacity data recording, works by locally heating the disk with near-field light, thereby enhancing magnetic recording capabilities. Toshiba accomplished an impressive 32 TB on just 10 disks, leveraging the adoption of Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology. The company plans to begin shipping test sample HDDs featuring HAMR technology in 2025. On the other hand, MAMR utilizes microwaves to boost magnetic recording capabilities. Toshiba was the first to demonstrate the effectiveness of this technology and has already started mass production of first-generation drives in 2021. By stacking 11 disks and implementing SMR technology along with improved signal processing, Toshiba achieved a remarkable 31 TB storage capacity.
These remarkable accomplishments were made possible through years of close collaboration with Resonac Corporation, a HDD media manufacturer, and TDK Corporation, a HDD head manufacturer. Together, Toshiba and its partners are dedicated to further advancing both HAMR and MAMR technologies to meet the ever-growing storage demands of cloud services and datacenters.
To share their achievements, Toshiba will be presenting a technical lecture at the IDEMA Symposium on May 16. This symposium will provide an opportunity to delve deeper into the details of the demonstration and showcase the immense potential of these next-generation HDD technologies.
