SK hynix introduces its latest ZUFS 4.0 mobile NAND solution, utilizing a unique data storage and classification approach to significantly improve operating speed and storage management efficiency for smartphones and other mobile devices, with plans for mass production in the third quarter and a focus on becoming the top global AI memory provider.
- The ZUFS 4.0 is designed specifically for smartphones and other mobile devices, making it a top choice in this category.
- The unique approach to data storage and classification significantly enhances a smartphone's operating speed and storage management efficiency.
- The ZUFS 4.0 improves read and write performance by over four times, resulting in a 40% increase in product lifespan.
SK hynix, a leading semiconductor supplier, has launched its latest innovation in mobile NAND solutions for on-device AI applications – the Zoned UFS, or ZUFS 4.0. Designed specifically for smartphones and other mobile devices, the ZUFS 4.0 is set to become the industry’s top choice in this category. SK hynix aims to leverage its success in high-performance DRAM, such as HBM, to establish its dominance in the NAND space.
What sets the ZUFS apart is its unique approach to data storage and classification. Unlike traditional UFS solutions, which store data indiscriminately, the ZUFS organizes and stores data based on its characteristics and purpose. By grouping similar data together in separate zones, the ZUFS significantly enhances a smartphone’s operating speed and storage management efficiency. In fact, it reduces the time required to run applications during prolonged use by an impressive 45% compared to conventional UFS solutions. Additionally, the ZUFS improves read and write performance by over four times, resulting in a 40% increase in product lifespan.
The development of the ZUFS began back in 2019 when SK hynix collaborated with a global platform service company in anticipation of the growing demand for high-performance NAND solutions driven by the rise of AI applications. After providing prototypes of the ZUFS, SK hynix worked closely with its customer to develop the 4.0 version, which meets the specifications set by the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC). Mass production of the ZUFS 4.0 is scheduled to commence in the third quarter, with plans to supply various on-device AI smartphones for global companies.
Ahn Hyun, Head of the N-S Committee at SK hynix, emphasized the increasing need for better memory options as major tech companies focus on developing their own AI applications. He stated that SK hynix is committed to strengthening its position as the leading global AI memory provider by delivering high-performance NAND solutions that meet these evolving requirements. The company also aims to foster stronger partnerships with leading ICT companies to drive innovation in the industry.
