Micron introduces Crucial-Branded LPCAMM2 Memory Modules: 64GB of LPDDR5X at $330

Micron has officially entered the retail market with its LPDDR5X-based LPCAMM2 memory modules, which are now available for purchase under the Crucial brand. This release coincides with the launch of Lenovo’s ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 laptop, the first device designed to utilize these memory modules. The arrival of Micron’s LPCAMM2 modules marks the beginning of the highly anticipated era of modular LPDDR5X memory.

The LPCAMM2 modules come in capacities of 32 GB and 64 GB, featuring a dual-channel design with a 128-bit wide interface. These modules are built around LPDDR5X memory, capable of reaching data rates of up to 7500 MT/s. With a peak bandwidth of 120 GB/s, the LPCAMM2 modules offer impressive performance. While Micron has not disclosed the exact latencies of these modules, they claim that the high data transfer rates of LPDDR5X compensate for any potential delays.

One of the key advantages of LPDDR5X memory is its significantly lower power consumption. Micron states that active power per 64-bit bus is 43-58% lower compared to DDR5 at the same speed, with standby power being up to 80% lower. Additionally, similar to DDR5 modules, LPCAMM2 modules include a power management IC and voltage regulating circuitry, allowing module manufacturers to further reduce power consumption.

However, it’s important to note that for the initial generation of LPCAMM2 modules, system vendors will need to make a choice between modularity and performance. While soldered-down LPDDR5X memory can reach speeds up to 8533 MT/sec (with even faster speeds on the horizon), the fastest LPCAMM2 modules planned for this year will operate at 7500 MT/sec. This means vendors must decide whether to offer the flexibility of modular LPDDR5X or opt for higher bandwidth and space savings by soldering down the memory.

Micron anticipates that LPCAMM2 modules with speeds of 9600 MT/sec will be available by 2026. It is highly likely that even faster memory options will emerge within the same timeframe.

For those interested, Micron’s Crucial LPDDR5X 32 GB module is priced at $174.99, while the 64 GB module costs $329.99.
