Silicon Motion reports decrease in net sales and net income for Q1 2024, but remains optimistic about future growth and profitability due to strong product portfolio and customer base, with plans to scale controller programs and capitalize on increasing demand for high-performance storage solutions.
- Successful scaling of programs with flash maker customers
- Steady improvement in business performance, including higher average selling prices and profitability
- Increasing trend of outsourcing and demand for higher-density storage solutions
Silicon Motion Technology Corporation, a leading provider of controller solutions for flash memory storage devices, has released its financial results for the first quarter of 2024. The company reported a decrease in net sales compared to the previous quarter, with net income also declining.
Despite these decreases, Silicon Motion remains optimistic about its business performance. Wallace Kou, the President and CEO of Silicon Motion, highlighted that demand in the first quarter exceeded expectations and improved average selling prices (ASPs) contributed to better profitability. The company saw an increase in client SSD revenue for the fourth consecutive quarter, indicating stabilization in the end-market demand and successful scaling of programs with flash maker customers.
Kou expressed confidence in Silicon Motion’s ability to sustain growth and profitability throughout the year, thanks to their strong product portfolio and customer base. The company’s controller solutions enable PC and smartphone original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to leverage high-performance, cost-effective solid-state storage for applications like AI-at-the-edge.
Looking ahead, Silicon Motion expects its new SSD and eMMC+UFS controller programs to continue scaling throughout 2024, driven by the increasing trend of outsourcing and the demand for higher-density storage solutions. The company anticipates steady improvement in its business performance, including higher average selling prices and profitability.
In terms of financials, Silicon Motion reported $10.7 million in capital expenditures for the first quarter of 2024. This included routine purchases of testing equipment, software, design tools, and building construction in Hsinchu.
To provide further insights into its financial results and future outlook, Silicon Motion will host a conference call on May 3, 2024, at 8:00 am Eastern Time.
Silicon Motion’s strong start to the year and increasing backlog have prompted an upward revision of its full-year outlook. The company expects steady improvement throughout 2024 as it continues to scale its controller programs and capitalize on the growing demand for high-performance storage solutions.

Technology Explained
SSD: A Solid State Drive (SSD) is a modern data storage device that employs flash memory technology to store data electronically. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in significantly faster read and write speeds. This leads to quicker boot times, faster application loading, and smoother overall system performance. SSDs are known for their durability, shock resistance, and energy efficiency, making them ideal for laptops, ultrabooks, and other portable devices. They come in various form factors, including 2.5-inch, M.2, and PCIe cards, and are favored for their reliability, quiet operation, and reduced heat generation
