QNAP Systems has upgraded its Security Center with a new feature, "Unusual File Activity Monitoring," which proactively detects and mitigates potential security threats for NAS devices, offering comprehensive protection and risk assessment for users' valuable data.
- Proactive monitoring and analysis of NAS systems, file activity, and security threats
- Instant security measures to mitigate potential or confirmed threats
- Customizable security policies for increased accuracy
QNAP Systems, a leading provider of network-attached storage (NAS) solutions, has launched an upgraded version of its Security Center with a new feature called “Unusual File Activity Monitoring.” This enhancement aims to bolster system risk assessment and protection for QNAP NAS devices.
The Security Center is a comprehensive tool that proactively scans, monitors, and analyzes the status of NAS systems, file activity, and potential security threats. It also offers instant protective measures against attacks, ensuring the complete protection of data stored on the NAS and reducing the risk of data loss.
According to Jimmy Tan, product manager of QNAP, the company has developed active protection measures to provide robust security checks and data protection for NAS devices. The new “Unusual File Activity Monitoring” feature takes a proactive approach by monitoring and detecting any unusual file activities on the NAS. It then provides instant security measures to mitigate potential or confirmed security threats, safeguarding users’ valuable data.
QNAP invites all users to participate in the beta test of the “Unusual File Activity Monitoring” feature and provide feedback to further enhance the user experience and continuously improve their solutions.
Key features of the upgraded Security Center include:
1. Active file activity monitoring (Beta): The Security Center supports the new “Unusual File Activity Monitoring” feature, which proactively detects any unusual file activities on the NAS. Users can monitor the system status through the Security Center and track the average count of these activities. This allows them to stay informed about potential security threats and take quick response actions.
2. Instant security measures: In case of any detected unusual file activities, the Security Center offers three instant security measures: enabling read-only mode, creating volume snapshots, or pausing snapshot scheduling. These measures are automatically triggered when event alerts are raised, effectively minimizing the risk of data loss due to ransomware threats, malware attacks, or human errors.
3. NAS security status scanning and checkups: The Security Center conducts comprehensive checks to identify weaknesses and performs manual or scheduled security scanning and checkups. It helps detect potential security threats and fortify the NAS system. Additionally, users can easily access security advisories released by QNAP’s Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT).
4. Customized security policies: Users can configure their own security policies based on the specific requirements of their network environment. This feature allows for increased accuracy in the security checkup process for NAS systems.
5. Instant alert notification: When risk alerts are triggered, users receive timely notifications via email or mobile push notifications. This ensures that critical risk assessment information is not missed, enabling users to stay in control of the latest NAS system status.
6. Anti-virus and malware removal software integration: The Security Center seamlessly integrates with popular virus scanning and malware removal software such as Malware Remover, McAfee Antivirus, and QuFirewall from QNAP App Center. This integration provides users with comprehensive protection against potential threats.

Technology Explained
NAS: Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a specialized storage device or server that provides centralized data storage and access over a network, usually using Ethernet connections. NAS systems are designed to offer a convenient and efficient way to store and share files among multiple users or devices within a home or office environment. Unlike traditional storage solutions, NAS devices operate independently and have their own operating systems and management interfaces. They are characterized by easy setup and configuration, making them accessible even to users with limited technical expertise. NAS devices can offer various features, including data redundancy through RAID configurations, remote access over the internet, automatic backup, media streaming, and even application hosting in some advanced models. As a versatile and user-friendly storage solution, NAS has become a popular choice for both personal and small business use.
