- achievement in 5G technology
- Maximizes use of spectrum resources
- Enables high-speed services for mobile users
Samsung Electronics and Qualcomm Technologies have announced a achievement in the field of 5G technology. The companies have successfully completed 1024 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) tests for both Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) spectrum bands, making it the first time this has been achieved for FDD.
QAM is an advanced modulation technology that allows for more efficient transmission of data or information. It determines how many bits of data can be delivered in each transmission. While 256 QAM is commonly used in commercial networks, Samsung and Qualcomm Technologies have now accomplished the latest 1024 QAM as defined in the 3GPP Release 17 specifications.
This enhanced QAM technology is significant as it helps operators maximize their use of spectrum resources and enables mobile users to enjoy high-speed services such as live video streaming and online gaming. The test was conducted in Samsung’s R&D lab in Korea using Samsung’s 5G vRAN software and radios, along with Qualcomm Technologies’ mobile phone form-factor test device equipped with its latest Snapdragon X75 5G Modem-RF System.
By using a 20 MHz bandwidth, the companies achieved a downlink speed of 485 Mbps, which is more than 20% higher than what is currently possible with the standard 256 QAM. This near-theoretical gain demonstrates the potential of this technology.
Samsung plans to further test 1024 QAM in traditional RAN and expects the technology to be commercially available within this year. This achievement showcases Samsung’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of mobile technology and its ongoing collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies.
Sunil Patil, Vice President of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies, expressed his excitement about the achievement and emphasized their dedication to supporting operators in enhancing 5G throughput and boosting spectral efficiency. He believes that leveraging advanced QAM technology empowers operators to deliver seamless, high-speed mobile services to 5G users.
Samsung has been at the forefront of delivering end-to-end 5G solutions, including chipsets, radios, and cores. Their ongoing research and development efforts drive the industry forward, and they offer a market-leading product portfolio that includes vRAN 3.0, Open RAN, core solutions, private network solutions, and AI-powered automation tools. With these innovative network solutions, Samsung provides connectivity to millions of users worldwide.
