Micron showcased its 256 GB DDR5-8800 MCRDIMMs at NVIDIA's GTC conference, designed for next-generation servers with Intel's Xeon Scalable 'Granite Rapids' processors, offering enhanced performance and increased DRAM content per server.

  • Increased performance with DDR5-8800 data rates
  • Higher DRAM content per server with 256 GB capacity
  • Specialized buffer allows for concurrent retrieval of data, doubling performance

Micron recently announced the sampling of its latest memory modules, the 256 GB multiplexer combined (MCR) DIMMs. These DDR5-based MCRDIMMs are designed for next-generation servers, specifically those powered by Intel’s Xeon Scalable ‘Granite Rapids’ processors. These processors are expected to support 12 or 24 memory slots per socket, allowing datacenter machines to have either 3 TB or 6 TB of memory. With DDR5-8800 data rates, these modules offer enhanced performance and increased DRAM content per server.

During nVidia’s GTC conference, Micron showcased its 256 GB DDR5-8800 MCRDIMMs, generating excitement among server vendors and customers who are eager to build new servers for the upcoming wave of AI accelerators. Tom’s Hardware managed to capture some images of these impressive memory modules.

The Micron 256 GB DDR5-8800 MCRDIMMs come in two variants: a taller module with 80 DRAM chips distributed on both sides, and a standard-height module using 2Hi stacked packages. Both versions are based on monolithic 32 Gb DDR5 ICs and cater to different server configurations. The standard-height MCRDIMM is designed for 1U servers. While the power consumption of the taller version aligns with expectations, around 20W, the power consumption of the module using 2Hi packages remains unknown but is expected to be slightly higher.

MCR DIMMs are dual-rank memory modules that feature a specialized buffer enabling both ranks to operate simultaneously. This buffer allows for concurrent retrieval of 128 bytes of data from both ranks per clock cycle, effectively doubling the performance compared to regular memory modules. Despite the increased complexity, MCR DIMMs enhance the performance and capacity of the memory subsystem without requiring additional memory modules. This simplifies the process of building server motherboards. These modules are expected to play a crucial role in enabling the next generation of servers to handle demanding applications, particularly in the AI field.
