In a move that highlights its commitment to advancing artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for the greater good, AMD has announced the appointment of Thomas Zacharia as senior vice president of strategic technology partnerships and public policy. With this new role, Zacharia will spearhead AMD’s efforts to expand its relationships with governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other entities worldwide, facilitating the rapid deployment of customized AMD-powered AI solutions.

Zacharia brings with him a wealth of experience in establishing successful public-private partnerships that have led to the deployment of computing solutions. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the creation of Frontier, the world’s fastest supercomputer, during his tenure as the Director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the largest multi-program science and energy research lab in the United States.

Lisa Su, Chair and CEO of AMD, expressed her confidence in Zacharia’s ability to drive innovation and collaboration, stating, “Thomas is a distinguished leader with decades of experience successfully creating public/private partnerships that have resulted in consistently deploying the world’s most powerful and advanced computing solutions.” She further emphasized his unique position to leverage his extensive background in advancing science and technology frontiers to facilitate the global adoption of AMD-powered AI solutions for societal benefit.

Zacharia himself expressed his enthusiasm for this new endeavor, stating, “After spending 35 years at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, I knew I wanted to apply my experience and capabilities to help drive the adoption of HPC and AI technologies to make a positive impact for the globe.” Having witnessed firsthand the capabilities of AMD’s leadership team and their technological solutions during the launch of Frontier, he is eager to combine his expertise in science, AI, and public policy with AMD’s exceptional team to create impactful technologies that will make a global impact.

Zacharia’s impressive career spans scientific research, technology development, public policy, and strategic public-private partnerships. As the director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, he oversaw the creation and implementation of the AMD-powered Frontier supercomputer, which broke the Exascale barrier and has been recognized as the world’s fastest supercomputer since May 2022, according to the Top500 list. Frontier, powered by AMD EPYC processors and AMD Instinct accelerators, has garnered multiple Gordon Bell Awards for its outstanding contributions to various scientific fields, including healthcare, materials, and energy.

With a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, an M.S. in materials science from the University of Mississippi, and a Ph.D. in engineering science from Clarkson University, Zacharia’s educational background complements his extensive professional achievements. His leadership at Oak Ridge National Laboratory involved spearheading critical multi-institutional research initiatives such as the Exascale Computing Project, Quantum Science Center, and Center for BioEnergy Innovation. Additionally, he established a National Security Sciences Directorate to address national security challenges through the application of scientific advancements.
