LG Electronics is taking a bold step forward in its extended reality (XR) ventures through a strategic collaboration with Meta Platforms, Inc. The goal is to leverage the strengths of both companies in products, content, services, and platforms to drive innovation in customer experiences within the virtual space.
To kick off this XR collaboration, LG’s top management, including CEO William Cho and President of the Home Entertainment Company Park Hyoung-sei, met with Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg at LG Twin Towers in Seoul. This meeting coincided with Zuckerberg’s tour of Asia and involved discussions on business strategies and considerations for next-gen XR device development.
During the meeting, CEO Cho had the opportunity to experience Meta’s advanced technology demonstrations, including the Meta Quest 3 headset and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. He expressed a keen interest in Meta’s large language models and their potential for on-device AI integration.
LG envisions that by combining Meta’s platform with its own content and service capabilities from its TV business, a unique ecosystem can be created in the XR domain. This aligns with LG’s focus on new business areas and its commitment to delivering next-gen extended reality experiences.
XR devices are seen as the future of personal devices, surpassing the limitations of mobile screens in terms of immersion and intuitiveness. Wearable devices have the potential to revolutionize customer interactions. CEO Cho has previously highlighted the opportunities for next-gen personal devices in the XR business arena.
This collaboration with Meta is part of LG’s strategic approach to concentrate resources on promising future areas with high growth potential. By aligning with Meta, LG aims to spearhead innovations in customer experiences within the virtual space and stay ahead in the rapidly developing XR market.
Last year, LG launched its Future Vision 2030, outlining its long-term goal of becoming a Smart Life Solution Company that seamlessly connects and expands customer experiences across various domains. As part of this vision, LG established a dedicated XR business unit within the Home Entertainment Company to accelerate its pursuit of new ventures in the virtual space arena.
With this strategic collaboration, LG is poised to make significant progress in the XR market and deliver compelling XR experiences to customers worldwide.
