Intel announced the Granite Rapids-D successor to Ice Lake-D processors and 6th Gen Xeon Family at Mobile World Congress 2024, focusing on AI Everywhere and improving performance in 5G workloads.
- Confirmation of Granite Rapids-D, successor to Ice Lake-D processors
- Designed to handle infrastructure, applications, and AI workloads
- Integrates 'AI Everywhere' across various infrastructures
At the Mobile World Congress 2024, Intel made some exciting announcements regarding their upcoming processors. One of the highlights was the confirmation of Granite Rapids-D, the successor to Ice Lake-D processors, which is expected to hit the market in 2025. This new chip is designed to handle infrastructure, applications, and AI workloads, targeting current and future AI and automation opportunities. Intel aims to integrate ‘AI Everywhere’ across various infrastructures, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing ownership costs in next-gen applications.
Another update from Intel at MWC 2024 was about the 6th Gen Xeon Family, codenamed Sierra Forest. This platform, set to launch later this year, is specifically designed for vRAN (virtual radio access network) operators to improve performance in 5G workloads. Sierra Forest will feature up to 288 cores and is expected to deliver a significant boost per rack compared to previous platforms.
Sierra Forest’s new chips utilize a full E-core architecture for maximum efficiency in scale-out, cloud-native, and contained environments. These chips are built on the Intel 3 process for CPU chiplets and the Intel 7 node for twin I/O chiplets, allowing for a scalable architecture that can accommodate increasing core counts.
Intel claims that Sierra Forest will enhance power efficiency with its up to 288 E-Cores per socket. They also state that it will deliver 2.7 times the performance-per-rack compared to a platform from 2021, although they didn’t specify which platform. Additionally, Intel promises savings of up to 30% in Infrastructure Power Management with Sierra Forest, thanks to their Infrastructure Power Manager (IPM) application.
The growing challenges of power manageability and efficiency in network operations are addressed by Intel’s IPM application, which allows network operators to optimize energy efficiency and achieve TCO savings. The inclusion of vRAN and VRAM Boost further enhances the capabilities of Sierra Forest, reducing power consumption while doubling the available network capacity.
Intel’s focus on ‘AI Everywhere’ is evident in their announcements. They have introduced the vRAM AI Developer Kit, which enables partners and 5G network providers to develop AI models for optimizing vRAM applications and tailoring vRAN-based functions to different use cases.
Looking ahead to 2025, Intel’s Granite Rapids-D is designed for Edge solutions and aims to strengthen their position in vRAN workloads. This chip will build upon the advancements of the current Ice Lake-D for the edge, utilizing performance (P) cores and optimizing the V/F curve for the lower-powered Edge platform. Intel expects Granite Rapids-D to offer substantial cost and performance benefits on a global scale.
While Intel has not provided a specific release date for Granite Rapids-D in 2025, they are currently sampling these next-gen Xeon-D processors with partners to ensure a market-ready platform at launch. Exciting times lie ahead for Intel as they continue to innovate and push the boundaries of processor technology.
