Intel Corporation is addressing network operators' demands for energy-efficient scaling in 5G core networks by introducing new Efficient-cores to their roadmap and offering the Intel Infrastructure Power Manager software, which will deliver significant power savings and performance improvements for operators.
- Increased energy efficiency and reduced infrastructure footprint
- Improved performance per rack and virtual CPUs (vCPUs)
- Collaboration with industry leaders to accelerate sustainability goals
Intel Corporation has announced two major updates aimed at addressing network operators’ demands for energy-efficient scaling in 5G core networks. The company previewed its next-gen processors, codenamed Sierra Forest, which feature up to 288 Efficient-cores (E-Cores), and also announced the commercial availability of its Intel Infrastructure Power Manager (IPM) software for 5G core.
As 5G core networks continue to expand, communication service providers are seeking greater infrastructure efficiency. With the majority of 5G core networks currently deployed on Intel Xeon processors, Intel is uniquely positioned to tackle these efficiency challenges. By introducing new Efficient-cores to their roadmap and offering the Intel Infrastructure Power Manager software, Intel aims to help service providers reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) while achieving exceptional performance and power savings.
Energy consumption and infrastructure footprint reduction remain top challenges for network operators in building out their wireless 5G core networks. Intel’s Xeon processor roadmap, launched at Intel Innovation last fall, is now expanding to include E-core processors. These E-cores have been optimized for energy and TCO savings, allowing network operators to increase performance per rack and virtual CPUs (vCPUs) without significant changes to application software.
The upcoming Intel Xeon next-gen processors, Sierra Forest, set to launch later this year, will offer up to 288 cores and deliver a remarkable 2.7x performance per rack improvement for 5G Core workloads. This industry-leading performance per rack will enable network operators to achieve higher performance per watt, boosting efficiency without compromising on application software.
Intel is working closely with operators and 5G core software suppliers to deploy these new processors and the Intel Infrastructure Power Manager software. As the most widely deployed server CPUs in the industry, Intel Xeon processors have a proven track record. Leveraging their extensive ecosystem of partners, Intel’s collaboration and technological advancements utilizing E-cores will unlock significant power savings for a more sustainable future.
Several industry leaders have already expressed their support for Intel’s efforts. BT Group, the UK’s largest provider of fixed-line broadband and mobile services, sees energy efficiency as a key priority. Their collaboration with Intel, including the use of the latest Xeon processor and Intel Infrastructure Power Manager, will accelerate their path to sustainability.
Dell Technologies is also collaborating with Intel to deliver advanced servers in the telco industry, optimizing them to meet operators’ demands worldwide. Ericsson, a long-standing partner of Intel, will showcase the Intel Xeon Next-Gen processors running on their dual-mode 5G Core and Cloud Infrastructure, demonstrating a 3.2x performance improvement and over 40% reduction in energy consumption.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is working closely with Intel to maximize compute power efficiency and performance for 5G infrastructure on the Xeon next-gen processors. KDDI, a leading Japanese telecommunications operator, highlights power efficiency and core count as crucial factors in building 5G networks. They are impressed with the power savings and performance per watt improvement offered by Intel’s future Xeon processor.
SK Telecom is evaluating the future Intel Xeon processor and Intel Infrastructure Power Manager to accelerate their sustainability goals. Meanwhile, Telstra, in collaboration with Intel, aims to deliver the world’s most energy-efficient, performant, and sustainable 5G core network by evaluating the Intel Xeon Next Gen processor.
The Intel Infrastructure Power Manager software for 5G core, launched at MWC 2023, allows operators to leverage the built-in telemetry of Intel Xeon processors to reduce CPU power usage without compromising key performance metrics. This software can be installed on existing and future Xeon-based network infrastructure.
To learn more about Intel’s latest advancements, visitors can visit the Intel Booth at MWC (Hall 3, Booth 3E31) for demonstrations of the Intel Xeon next-gen processors and engage with 5G core network function software vendors to explore the Intel Infrastructure Power Manager further.
