Jensen Huang: The Necessity of Sovereign AI for All Nations

During his appearance at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, nVidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the importance of countries owning the production of their own intelligence. Huang described sovereign AI as a significant opportunity for world leaders, as it allows countries to have ownership over their data and the intelligence it produces. The event, attended by delegates from 150 countries, saw Huang engage in a fireside chat with the UAE’s Minister of AI, His Excellency Omar Al Olama.

The UAE has been making significant strides in transforming itself into a global information technology hub, and Huang’s visit to Dubai is part of his global tour that included meetings with leaders in various countries. The Middle East stands to benefit greatly from AI, with PwC projecting a $320 billion boost to the region’s economy by 2030. Huang urged leaders not to be “mystified” by AI and emphasized the need for countries to embrace AI by infusing it with local languages and expertise.

When asked how he would approach AI if he were the leader of a developing nation, Huang stressed the importance of building infrastructure and codifying the language and data of the culture into a large language model. NVIDIA GPUs have played a significant role in AI and accelerated computing, democratizing AI and enabling innovation across various fields.

Huang challenged the conventional advice of studying computer science to compete in the information age, stating that computing technologies should be created in a way that eliminates the need for programming and makes the programming language human. He believes that everyone in the world is now a programmer.

In a demonstration of the regional momentum behind AI, Moro Hub, a subsidiary of Digital DEWA, announced its collaboration with NVIDIA to build a green data center. This further highlights Dubai’s commitment to AI and its vision of becoming a leading global technology hub.

The World Governments Summit featured panels on smart mobility, sustainable development, and other topics, showcasing the latest advancements in AI. Huang and Al Olama also took the stage at the ‘Get Inspired’ ecosystem event, organized by the UAE’s AI Office, where they engaged with developers, start-ups, and other attendees.
