Samsung and Red Hat have successfully verified the compatibility of Samsung's CXL memory with Red Hat's software, expanding the potential for high-performance computing systems in various industries.
- Successful verification of CXL memory operations in a real user environment
- Collaboration with industry partner Red Hat to expand CXL ecosystem
- Optimization of CXL memory for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and compatibility with Red Hat's KVM and Podman environments
Samsung Electronics, a global leader in memory technology, has achieved a significant milestone in the industry by successfully verifying Compute Express Link (CXL) memory operations in a real user environment. Collaborating with open-source software provider Red Hat, Samsung is driving the expansion of its CXL ecosystem.
The demand for systems with greater memory bandwidth and capacity is rapidly increasing due to the exponential growth of data throughput and memory requirements in emerging fields like generative AI, autonomous driving, and in-memory databases. CXL, a unified interface standard, addresses the limitations of existing systems in terms of speed, Latency, and expandability by connecting various processors such as CPUs, GPUs, and memory devices through a PCIe interface.
YongCheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics, emphasized the company’s commitment to building the CXL memory ecosystem through collaborations with industry partners. The partnership with Red Hat exemplifies the collaboration between advanced software and hardware that enriches and accelerates the CXL ecosystem as a whole.
Samsung has optimized its CXL memory for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.3 and verified its compatibility with Red Hat’s KVM and Podman environments. This means that data center clients can seamlessly integrate Samsung’s CXL memory without requiring additional hardware adjustments.
Marjet Andriesse, Senior Vice President and Head of Red Hat Asia Pacific, highlighted the significance of the successful verification, as it expands the applicability of the CXL Memory Expander to Red Hat’s IaaS and PaaS-based software. This achievement represents an important milestone in the integration of hardware and software to foster an open-source ecosystem for next-generation memory development.
Samsung and Red Hat are collaborating on a “RHEL 9.3 CXL Memory Enabling Guide” to assist users in leveraging Samsung’s CXL memory on RHEL 9.3 and building high-performance computing systems in diverse user environments.
This partnership between Samsung and Red Hat began with a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in May 2022, focusing on next-generation memory development. The collaboration extends to various storage and memory products, including NVMe SSDs, CXL Memory, computational memory/storage, and fabrics. The Samsung Memory Research Center (SMRC) plays a crucial role in driving these joint efforts.

Technology Explained
Latency: Technology latency is the time it takes for a computer system to respond to a request. It is an important factor in the performance of computer systems, as it affects the speed and efficiency of data processing. In the computer industry, latency is a major factor in the performance of computer networks, storage systems, and other computer systems. Low latency is essential for applications that require fast response times, such as online gaming, streaming media, and real-time data processing. High latency can cause delays in data processing, resulting in slow response times and poor performance. To reduce latency, computer systems use various techniques such as caching, load balancing, and parallel processing. By reducing latency, computer systems can provide faster response times and improved performance.

NVMe: Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) is a newly developed technology that has been gaining traction in the computer industry. This technology is a standard interface which allows for high-speed storage and retrieval of data from solid state drives (SSDs). NVMe is designed to increase the speed of data transfers in storage systems by enabling a direct connection to PCI Express (PCIe) bus, resulting in significantly faster access times compared to traditional interface protocols such SSDs. NVMe is particularly useful for applications that require lightning-fast access to large amounts of high-value data. NVMe-based SSDs are being widely adopted in the computer industry and are being employed to power data centers, high-end workstations, and gaming machines to support lightning-fast data processing and retrieval, which unlocks possibilities for machine learning, real-time analytics, edge computing, and other cutting-edge applications. NVMe is proving to be an invaluable tool in the field of computing, offering immense

PCIe: PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) is a high-speed serial computer expansion bus standard for connecting components such as graphics cards, sound cards, and network cards to a motherboard. It is the most widely used interface in the computer industry today, and is used in both desktop and laptop computers. PCIe is capable of providing up to 16 times the bandwidth of the older PCI standard, allowing for faster data transfer speeds and improved performance. It is also used in a variety of other applications, such as storage, networking, and communications. PCIe is an essential component of modern computing, and its applications are only expected to grow in the future.
