Sony has launched its new Alpha 9 III (α9 III) camera, featuring the world’s first full-frame global shutter image sensor. This innovative sensor allows the camera to shoot at burst speeds of up to 120 fps without any distortion or camera blackout. Paired with Sony’s most advanced AF system to date, which includes AI autofocus with up to 120 times AF/AE focus calculations per second, the α9 III opens up new possibilities for professional photographers to capture decisive moments.
Yann Salmon Legagneur, Head of IP&S Marketing at Sony Europe, describes the α9 III as a landmark achievement for Sony’s imaging business. The camera has been designed with the needs and feedback of professional photographers in mind, addressing specific requests and incorporating new capabilities that allow photographers to capture scenes they’ve never been able to before.
The α9 III boasts a range of impressive features, including a world-first global shutter full-frame stacked CMOS image sensor with approximately 24.6 effective megapixels and built-in memory. It achieves blackout-free continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking of up to approximately 120 frames per second. The camera also features high-density Focal plane phase detection AF and a designated AI processing unit for real-time subject recognition and tracking.
In terms of video performance, the α9 III offers distortion-free image expression and can record 4K 120p high-frame-rate video without cropping. It also features S-Cinetone, which enhances human skin tones and subjects, creating natural highlights.
Sony has prioritized operability and reliability for professionals with the α9 III. The grip has been ergonomically designed for comfortable use, even with telephoto lenses or during extended shooting sessions. The camera includes a 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor that can be operated by touch, as well as a high-visibility electronic viewfinder.
The α9 III supports high-speed workflows and immediate delivery with features such as a playback image filter and a function menu that can be used during image playback. It also offers fast data transfer speeds, compatibility with professional mobile applications, and support for various memory media.
The α9 III camera will be available in January 2024, with an estimated European retail price of approximately €7,000/£6,100 for the body only. The VG-C5 grip will also be available in January 2024, priced at approximately €450/£390.
