AMD has launched the Ryzen Threadripper 7970X and 7980X processors, offering up to 64 cores for impressive compute throughput and superior performance in content creation, compression, and encoding tasks.
- Threadripper 7980X outperforms the Xeon W9-3495X by an impressive 47%, while the 7970X holds a respectable 27% lead over the 3475X.
- Threadripper 7970X surpasses its 64-core sibling while outperforming the Sapphire Rapids Xeon WS.
- Threadripper 7970X outperforms the Core i9-13900K by a significant margin.
AMD has just launched a sneak peek of their highly anticipated Ryzen Threadripper 7970X and 7980X processors. These powerful chips are set to make their mark in the high-end desktop (HEDT) and prosumer market, offering impressive core counts of up to 64. With such immense compute throughput, these processors are poised to handle any rendering workload with ease.
To put these processors to the test, we got our hands on the Ryzen Threadripper 7970X with 32 cores and the Threadripper 7980X with a whopping 64 cores. Paired with an ASUS PRO WS TRX50 Sage motherboard, G.SKILL Zeta R5 Neo DDR5 32GB x4 @ 6,400 MT/s memory, NZXT Kraken 360 cooler, and Corsair RM1000i power supply, our test bench was ready to push these processors to their limits.
In terms of content creation, particularly rendering and editing, the Threadrippers truly shine. The 64-core Threadripper 7980X excels in most compute-intensive segments, while the 7970X manages to secure a few wins in Adobe Creation Cloud. In fact, in the Cinebench R20 benchmark, the Ryzen Threadripper 7980X outperforms the Xeon W9-3495X by an impressive 47%, while the 7970X holds a respectable 27% lead over the 3475X.
Despite featuring fewer cores than their Sapphire Rapids rivals, the Zen 4 Threadrippers maintain their superiority in most content creation workloads. In some of the PugetBench tests, the Threadripper 7970X even surpasses its 64-core sibling while outperforming the Sapphire Rapids Xeon WS.
Moving on to compression and encoding tasks, the Ryzen Threadripper 7970X once again proves its expertise. In a 7-zip benchmark, it outperforms the Core i9-13900K by a significant margin. The 7980X, on the other hand, performs similarly to its 32-core counterpart. In the X265 4K benchmark, the 7970X takes the lead, followed closely by the 7980X.
While workstation processors are not typically used for gaming, we decided to put the Zen 4 Threadrippers to the test in five different titles, both with and without Ray Tracing. As expected, these processors may not match the performance of their consumer-oriented counterparts, but they still deliver stable frame rates with comparable lows in every scenario.
In conclusion, the Threadripper 7000 series with its impressive core counts and exceptional performance is set to dominate the HEDT space. While it may lack a few server capabilities, this is not a deal-breaker for most professionals and creators. The Threadripper 7980X and 7970X consistently outperform their Xeon Sapphire Rapids WS counterparts, offering superior performance per dollar. For those in need of a true workstation powerhouse, it doesn’t get much better than this.
