Comcast and Broadcom have announced a collaboration to develop an AI-powered access network, marking a significant step forward in the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning within network infrastructure. The new chipset, which will embed AI and ML capabilities within nodes, amps, and modems, aims to automate network functions and enhance the customer experience through actionable intelligence.
One of the key features of the chipset is its incorporation of DOCSIS 4.0 Full Duplex (FDX), Extended Spectrum (ESD), and the ability to run both simultaneously. This technology will enable internet service providers worldwide to deliver DOCSIS 4.0 services, offering symmetrical multi-gigabit internet speeds, lower Latency, and enhanced security and reliability without the need for extensive network infrastructure construction.
Comcast recently announced plans to introduce the world’s first customers to internet services powered by DOCSIS 4.0 using FDX. While the company will continue leveraging FDX, the collaboration with Broadcom will provide additional options for delivering optimal connectivity experiences.
Elad Nafshi, Chief Network Officer at Comcast Cable, emphasized the importance of the Xfinity 10G Network in meeting evolving connectivity needs. Nafshi stated that the new Unified DOCSIS4 chipset from Broadcom will enable the deployment of transformational AI network capabilities alongside symmetrical multi-gig speeds. This chipset will not only benefit Comcast but also provide the entire industry with options for upgrading network infrastructure for DOCSIS 4.0.
The new end-to-end chipsets will revolutionize network operations and customer experience functions by making smarter performance decisions through AI-driven network diagnostics insights, enhancing monitoring and issue detection using efficient telemetry data, transforming network maintenance with real-time issue localization and predictive self-healing capabilities, improving cybersecurity intrusion detection, assisting customers more effectively through local and cloud-based AI, and monitoring home IoT devices for connectivity disruptions. These advancements will be achieved while reducing network latency and ensuring the highest privacy standards for customer data.
Rich Nelson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom’s Broadband Video Group, highlighted the benefits of the Unified DOCSIS4 chipset. By incorporating FDX, ESD, or both simultaneously, this chipset combines the advantages of both technologies, enabling economies of scale and a common retail modem for the industry. Nelson emphasized that the chipset’s edge network and in-home capabilities will enhance network intelligence, reliability, privacy protection, and cybersecurity for consumers.
Comcast and Broadcom’s collaboration is based on CableLabs’ DOCSIS 4.0 specifications. The companies have a history of working together to introduce innovations that drive the industry towards the next generation of connectivity. They conducted the world’s first full duplex multi-gigabit symmetrical test on Broadcom-built silicon in 2021 and tested the first Full Duplex DOCSIS 4.0 system-on-chip (SoC) cable modem in January 2022, delivering symmetrical speeds exceeding 4 Gbps. Comcast also successfully tested the final technical component necessary for multi-gig symmetrical speed powered by DOCSIS 4.0 with 10G smart amps built on a Broadcom-developed reference design.
Trials for the new chipset are expected to begin in early 2024, with deployment in live networks anticipated before the end of the same year. This collaboration between Comcast and Broadcom marks a significant milestone in the advancement of AI-powered access networks and the future of connectivity.

Latency: Technology latency is the time it takes for a computer system to respond to a request. It is an important factor in the performance of computer systems, as it affects the speed and efficiency of data processing. In the computer industry, latency is a major factor in the performance of computer networks, storage systems, and other computer systems. Low latency is essential for applications that require fast response times, such as online gaming, streaming media, and real-time data processing. High latency can cause delays in data processing, resulting in slow response times and poor performance. To reduce latency, computer systems use various techniques such as caching, load balancing, and parallel processing. By reducing latency, computer systems can provide faster response times and improved performance.
