Intel's i9-14900K offers only a marginal 2.5% speed increase in gaming performance compared to AMD's Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

  • Intel's i9-14900K offers a slightly higher boost clock than its predecessors.
  • Intel's official benchmarks show a double-digit gain for the 14900K over the Ryzen 9 7950X3D in five titles.
  • Owners of AM4 or AM5 platforms would be better off opting for the most affordable X3D chip.

Intel’s i9-14900k: Merely 2.5% Speedier than AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D in Gaming

As the holiday season approaches, chipmakers are preparing to unveil their latest products. Intel is set to launch its 1st Gen Core Ultra processors for high-performance notebooks, while the desktop segment will see the release of the Raptor Lake-S Refresh. While these chips, including the 14900K, offer a slightly higher boost clock, they are largely similar to their predecessors.

Leaked benchmarks of Intel’s flagship processor, the 14900K, have recently surfaced, and it comes as no surprise that the scores are only marginally higher than those of the Core i9-13900K. Intel has compared the 14900K to AMD’s Ryzen 9 7950X3D across 25 games, boasting a lead of up to 23% over its competitor. However, what Intel fails to mention is that the 7950X3D is essentially a 7800X3D with an additional die that does not significantly enhance gaming performance.

To accurately compare the 14900K, it is best to pit it against the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which is just as fast, if not faster, in gaming workloads. Intel’s official benchmarks do show a double-digit gain for the 14900K over the Ryzen 9 7950X3D (and the 7800X3D) in five titles, notably Metro Exodus, Starfield, and Warhammer 3. However, out of the 25 games tested, the Ryzen processor matches or surpasses the 14900K’s performance in 11 titles, with notable leads in Cyberpunk 2077, Fortnite, and DOTA 2.

It is important to note that the 14th Gen Raptor Lake Refresh is not intended for owners of Alder Lake or Raptor Lake. Unless you are using a Rocket Lake or Comet Lake platform, it is advisable to avoid upgrading to this new chip. Instead, owners of AM4 or AM5 platforms would be better off opting for the most affordable X3D chip. This will provide a quieter system that consumes less power while delivering faster performance compared to most “next-gen” CPUs currently available in the market.

In conclusion, Intel’s i9-14900K may not offer significant improvements over its predecessor or its AMD counterpart in gaming performance. While Intel highlights its lead over the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, it fails to mention that this AMD chip is essentially on par with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which offers comparable or better performance in several titles. As consumers consider their options for high-performance processors, it is crucial to carefully evaluate the benchmarks and choose the chip that best suits their specific needs and platform compatibility.
