The CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, has been making waves with his outspoken criticism of entities that he believes are taking advantage of the market and abusing their positions. And recently, he took aim at Google and Apple once again.

According to TechCrunch, Sweeney didn’t hold back during the Y Combinator event, accusing both companies of employing “gangster” tactics in their businesses. He claims that these entities are aggressively targeting the market and following orders, but in a malicious way. Sweeney believes that both companies will do whatever they can to avoid facing consequences.

It’s important to note that Apple and Google have been at odds with Epic Games for years, especially after the Fortnite debacle on both platforms. Epic Games filed lawsuits against both companies for their practices in their respective app stores.

During the event, Sweeney provided some examples of how these companies employ their tactics. For instance, on the Android side, Google displays a warning message to users when they try to install the Epic Games Store, suggesting that it could be malicious since it comes from unknown sources.

Sweeney refers to these warnings as “scare screens,” designed to instill fear in users and discourage them from installing the application altogether. Despite both Android and Apple’s recent allowance of installing apps from external sources, these scare screens continue to be used to intimidate users.

Epic Games’ data reveals that a significant percentage of users, around 50 to 60%, refrain from installing the platform after encountering this warning, confirming Sweeney’s claims.

On the Apple side, Sweeney highlights how the company’s fees imposed on developers, as well as its restrictions, make it nearly impossible for major entities to distribute their content through the Epic Games Store. While Apple technically allows third-party apps and stores on its system, the obstacles it tries to impose often deter many users, especially in Europe.

According to Sweeney, unless a game generates a substantial amount of revenue per user, which is quite rare, it becomes practically impossible to use the Epic Games Store for distribution due to Apple’s fees.

Sweeney’s criticisms shed light on the ongoing battle between Epic Games and tech giants like Google and Apple. It raises questions about the fairness of their practices and the impact they have on developers and users alike. As the fight continues, it remains to be seen how these companies will respond and whether any changes will be made to level the playing field.
